PEST MANAGEMENT
Organic or regenerative use
Kent Daane ventured back into the
world of trap crops with this study
because an organic pistachio grower
irrigated the trees between the rows,
allowing researchers to irrigate a trap
crop. When the grower irrigated on the
berm, he ended up with resident weeds,
which proved problematic because
he couldn't mow the berm. However,
he could irrigate the trees through the
middles, which allowed for mowing,
weed control on the berms, provided a
green understory, and did not increase
insect pest damage.

" He moved the line back and forth, "
explained Daane. " And growers are
continuing with this practice of moving
the line back and forth because it's
beneficial enough to them to continue
with the cost of doing so. "
Conventional growers can spray an
herbicide.
These insects in particular are
problematic for organic systems because
growers are much more limited in what
they can use in their orchards. Some
years can experience unpredictably high
pest pressures.

" Having an alternative where you can
use these trap crops as a method for early
detection or to keep pests at bay would
be a huge asset for growers, " said Straser.
Can cover crops established for other
reasons coexist with trap crops? It
depends on what a grower is hoping to
gain from it. Many ground covers that
are used as trap crops are also commonly
used to enhance beneficial insect
populations.
" If we can highlight some of these
plants that have a dual purpose, or
maybe have an alternative purpose that
wasn't thought of before - say they're
attractive to leaffooted bug, for instance -
then it could be implemented in other
systems, " Straser said.
The California pistachio industry
continuously seeks solutions to insect
pest problems, focusing on both
sustainable avenues of pest control
and combining management practices
with pest management. This project
was further funded by the California
Department of Food and Agriculture,
Specialty Crop Research Initiative,
and partnered with the University of
California and the pistachio industry.
