Preserving the
orchards
W
e are into warmer weather,
a season we as humans tend
to enjoy immensely. Yet, we
aren't the only creatures that enjoy the
weather conditions late spring and early
summer bring us. Pests and diseases can
also thrive in certain conditions and
as we all know, they are unwanted in
orchards.
In this issue, we feature a pest and disease report and
infographic, beginning on page 8, which highlights the results
of a survey we conducted about the pest and disease challenges
growers are most concerned with for this year's crops.
Additionally, Jhalendra P. Rijal, UCCE, sat down with me
and discussed West Coast pests specifically and provided
information on economics, IPM strategies and the most notable
challenges that he and colleagues are seeing in orchards. Turn to
page 14 to read more.
Of course, we can't bring up pest and disease difficulties
without acknowledging technology and the important role
sprayers play every year inside the groves. Technological
innovations are paving the way for a variety of options. Turn to
page 10 to see what is available and how it can help you within
your operations.
I'm also excited to share that this edition features a hazelnut
orchard called Hazelnut Hill, page 6, where the family is
incredibly involved with every facet of the ag business - from
planting to new product offerings and even to packaging. The
Henderson family truly has a farm-to-table approach, so be sure
to check them out.
