well as others. Today's new varieties
require new expertise - and Dutch
potato storage manufacturer TolsmaGrisnich
believes they've got the
expertise you need.
To be sure, potato storage in Europe
is quite different from potato storage

in the U.S. There are several reasons for
this, said Jan van Maldegem, TolsmaGrisnich
marketing manager. The first
has to do with differences in climate.
Sheer volume is another differing
factor; American farmers store larger
volumes of single-variety potatoes than
their European counterparts.
On a recent visit to Idaho, Van
Maldegem said he noticed an interesting
trend arising.
" They are changing varieties, " Van
Maldegem said. " Russet Burbank was
always the big one, but now they are
changing to new varieties that have
a nice look and feel. We had the same
transition here 30 years ago. "
But the biggest difference, he said,
is that Europeans use high air volume
to ventilate, and they ventilate
for
shorter periods of time each day. While
European growers can get away with
just two hours of ventilation, American
producers ventilate nearly 24 hours per
day, he said.
American potato growers do not
measure
potato
temperature, Van
Maldegem said. Instead, they measure
the plenum or the pressure chamber
temperature.
