Mehlin foresees a year of challenges
and increased input costs but one
tempered by higher returns on
potatoes for the next two years.
He said that the 2021-22 season
was a " peculiar year in terms of
challenges. Logistical bottlenecks,
high transportation and labor costs -
all these factors led to the smallest
market production of potato in
almost a decade. "
He stated that the coming year would
be more of the same, but the greater
impact would be the steep rise in input
prices as well as the inflationary pressure
of high machinery replacement costs
on production costs.
However, Mehlin said that
growers are seeing a higher price
per hundredweight this year due to
increased demand, compounded
by a diminished supply of potatoes
because of extreme heat throughout
the growing season last year.
U.S. yield per acre in 2021 dropped
5% from 461 cwt/acre in 2020 to
438 cwt/acre in 2021. Total production
dropped 2.4% in spite of harvested
acres rising 2.6% to 935,700 from
911,700 in 2020.
For the past 20 years fresh market
potato consumption has declined.
According to Mehlin, consumption
is two-thirds of what it was in 2000.
However, during the covid economic

disruption, the fresh market sector
enjoyed an increase in demand that
continues in 2022.
MARKET RECOVERIES
Both the fresh market sector and
the fry and chip process sectors
Early indicators for 2022 are that potato
acreage will drop 1.5 to 2% nationally and 4%
in Idaho, said Almuhanad Mehlin of
RaboResearch Food and Agribusiness.
