CREATE TRAINING
ENVIRONMENTS
TO MITIGATE HIGH
RISK DEFICITS
BRIAN CAREY (MAJ, USAF, RET)

Strength, power, and endurance are only effective if they can be demonstrated when it counts. Developing and maintaining
readiness to execute at the highest levels possible means reducing high risk deficits in physical, cognitive, and tactical
skills during training and preparation. Often infrastructure constraints force human performance domains to be addressed
in isolation, preventing tacticians the ability to incorporate the physical components of real world tactical scenarios and
limiting the implementation of multiple tactical skills in one training iteration. Integrating physical fitness and tactical skills can
unleash novel and effective opportunities for training, assessing, and improving multiple domains of performance at once and
minimizing deficits under pressure.
As unit leaders, it was critical for us to have our team members not only be physically fit, but experienced in how to execute
those physical skills in various operational environments. In addition, the opportunity to educate individuals on how to
maximize their physical training to transfer athletic skills to tactical skills, connects the dots and focuses the intent of their
workouts. The ability to assess movement skills and capacities, evaluate deficits, and immediately connect to strength,
mobility, conditioning, and cognitive supplemental exercises can improve the overall training process and unit's readiness
and physical culture. Here are a few ways to create effective integrated training environments:
+ OBSTACLE COURSES PUT FUNCTIONAL TRAINING INTO PRACTICE. Exercise equipment including
kettlebells, barbells, dumbbells, and landmines are biased towards " gym " strength and power in controlled, known
conditions. O-course integration requires you to demonstrate and train multiple physical qualities in awkward and
asymmetrical positions to negotiate up, over, under, around and through barriers with or without additional load
carriage and working as a team to solve problems.
+ RAPPEL TOWERS PROVIDE SPECIFIC PHYSICAL QUALITIES AND TECHNICAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT.
Providing the right mix of conditioning and lower body strength training in the rappel area can avoid
compromising grip and pulling capacity, and place additional systemic stress to increase central and
peripheral metabolic and neuromuscular challenges.
+ TRAINING COMPLEXES, TRAINING TOWERS, RANGE, AND BREACHING SOLUTIONS, with easily
accessible human performance equipment and rigs, enable you to implement high stress and high heart rate
training environments to simulate various challenges faced in true operational and tactical settings.
The objective in creating these conditions should go beyond simply building a training space. The goal is to embody the
culture, values, and intent of those using these areas. Constructing and curating these requirements-driven training platforms
does not happen by accident and often cannot be purchased " off the shelf. " BeaverFit SOE training solutions are custom
designed in consultation with every customer to meet specific unit and mission requirements for military and first responders.
Throughout the collaborative design process, our team will engage with your key stake-holders and actual end-users to
