Winter 2023 - 13
The following tips, from a 2020 Army Press submission
by Sgt. Maj. Sean M. Horval, can create
a cohesive unit using Maslow's hierarchy of needs:
Be a motivated leader. Establish a dialogue
with each member of your team. What
motivates one person may not motivate
another. They should also be confident
that they can bring up any personal or
professional issues to their leader.
Build trust. Do not overemphasize control
measures or reduce people to passive
roles. Let soldiers solve problems without
micromanaging them.
Include team members in the decisionmaking
process. The more involved team
members are, the more likely they will be
motivated to accomplish the mission.
Provide proper feedback. Without
it, soldiers will not know if they are
accomplishing their mission. A lack of
feedback will likely result in a lack of
motivation.
Provide fair rewards and recognition.
When people know that their work is
valued, there is always motivation to do
more-and to do it well.
It's also important to take care of your physical
and mental health. Maslow's hierarchy of needs
emphasizes the importance of fulfilling your
physiological and safety needs in order to reach
the self-actualization level. This means taking care
of your physical health by eating well, exercising
regularly, and getting enough sleep. It also means
taking care of your mental health by managing
stress and seeking support when needed.
By focusing on your goals, connecting with
your fellow service members, and taking care of
your physical and mental health, you can develop
a sense of purpose within the military. This sense
of purpose can provide you with motivation and
drive, allowing you to succeed in your military
career and fulfill your potential. n
