TACTICAL TRAINING & CONDITIONING: What
are you trying to solve in the ROARHP Lab?
Hussien Jabai: Can we help with data-driven
decisions? From an observation piece, then
what does this data mean? And there are two
perspectives to that, 'No, we're just going to keep
doing what I'm doing. we don't need all of this data
to tell us we're doing right.' And the other side is so
keyed in on data that you get analysis paralysis.
So we try to operate from the perspective of, can
we collect data? Can we analyze it and then share
it in a way that makes sense to everyone? And it
may make it this perspective where no matter what
level you're at - if you're the personnel, if you're the
coach, or if you're the administration - those are
three different conversations. It's the same data set,
but a different conversation. Can we help facilitate
that into discussions or reports that are really going
to drive that dialogue to some kind of strategic
decision? Some of the projects that we have going
on, we've had a project going on for a couple of
years now, looking at heart rate variability.
TACTICAL T&C: How do you blend utilizing
high and low tech when evaluating tactical
operators?
Jabai: We integrate two sides of the house,
the low tech and the high tech, because we can
look at are there performance indicators in like a
broad jump. And we're seeing the farther you can
jump or they're more explosive, like we're seeing a
strong correlation with force plate data.
So, for someone who can't use a force plate,
can we utilize the broad jump? And I say that very
openly because we know the broad jump is lower
body power, but many of us use the broad jump
because other people use the broad jump. And
that's just the consensus across the board no matter
what test you use. So really trying to provide strong
correlations, but then strong suggestions on do I use
a broad jump versus a vertical jump. There are two
different skill components to that landing.
When I say from a skill perspective, more
people probably have jumped upwards just from
slapping the top of a door, whatever you did in
your childhood versus doing a broad jump and
actually having to land it appropriately. And then
as we get older, depending on your workforce,
what are the pros and cons of having you go
forward versus upwards? Looking ahead we'll be
integrating some things like FMS and more of our
lower-tech type of movement analysis.
TACTICAL T&C: How do you choose what
tests you want to include in your functional
movement screenings?
Jabai: You have so many different tests. You have
so many different things. What's the best bang for
your buck when you have like an example for us?
I see my cadets initially for our program and we're
getting more buy-in to add time.
But just to give you a perspective of something
we're fighting and trying to develop, we have
30 minutes, two to three times a week with our
cadets, which isn't much. And I am very thankful
for the time we have, but that's not enough to do
five million tests. I have to choose these three or
these four to do within this timeframe with 30
cadets or 40 cadets or however many, especially
if it's just me, maybe an intern, maybe two interns.
It depends on how many people I have helping
me, but that's the reality of academies. You might
have 30 minutes, you might have 45, you might
have an hour, but how do you the assessments
you're implementing, what are you getting out of
it without having to do five weeks of testing and
doing all the tests? n
