ATHLETE SPECIFIC SELF-MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
For athletes to perform their best, intense training and play
need to be met with opportunities for muscle recovery and
restoration. Self-myofascial release (SMR) is a tried-and-true
technique for helping athletes recover faster and perform
optimally. Some of the main benefi ts of self-myofascial
release include:
* Increased mobility through the elimination of " trigger
points " or stuck muscle fi bers and connective tissue that
occur with intense training and play
* Decreased muscle tension
* Increased blood fl ow to muscles and connective tissue,
speeding up muscle repair
Because diff erent sports impose diff erent demands on
the body, the approach to SMR will vary depending on
the athlete. Below are some ideas to help athletic trainers,
coaches and athletes get the most out of their SMR and
recovery eff orts.
Endurance Athletes
Distance runners and
soccer players would fall
into this category. Often
with these athletes,
small muscles that help
stabilize major joints are
the fi rst to suff er through
prolonged periods of
activity. Smaller, more
pointed tools, like the PRO-POINT™ and PRO-PODS™ are
ideal for releasing smaller muscles deep in the hips, back
and shoulders that are hard to reach with conventional
release tools.

Rotational Sport Athletes
Golfers, hockey, baseball and tennis players would fall into
this category. Rotating the upper body repeatedly over time

Power Athletes
Football players, baseball players, and Olympic weightlifting
competitors would fall into this category. Power athletes
typically move very explosively, and this explosive
movement originates in the hips and torso. For this reason,
these areas are where power athletes should focus during
SMR. Foam rollers, like OPTP® Black Axis® Firm Foam Rollers,
are a great choice for targeting the quadriceps, hamstrings
and glutes of the lower body, and the lats and scapula of
the torso.
