Training: An Introductory Course in the Care and Prevention
of Athletic Injuries " (7th Edition) consisted of experts in
athletic training education, clinical athletic training at the
university and secondary school levels, and an experienced
team physician. The authors felt that the diversity of the
editorial board was a huge consideration to the success of
the latest edition.

The editorial board provides insight based on their
various area of expertise. Again, the book chapters were
assigned to specific editorial board members. This way, the
editorial board was not overwhelmed by having to review
the entire updated version. Editorial board members were
then assigned specific chapters based on their expertise.
To facilitate this process, the four authors divided up the
chapters for review and were in communication with their
respective editorial board members for input.
The fourth operational step was to implement the
suggestions made by the editorial board, and re-review the
entire textbook one last time, again by chapter assignments
with the four authors. Mr. Cooper, being the lead author,
plays an important role in shepherding the process forward,
working with Dr. Wright who is the authors' contact with
Sagamore-Venture Publishing. The timeline for review was
motivated with respect to the authors responsibilities both
professionally and professionally.
The fifth operational piece was developing and reviewing
the ancillary materials for the textbook, namely the
presentations used in an introduction to athletic training
course. Dr. Deere played a vital role in coordinating all
these resources (slides test bank, 3D software, and videos)
into an educational format that enhances learning. This
operational component mirrored the textbook review in that
the authors were assigned specific power point chapters
to review and make suggestions. The review questions
at the end of each chapter were also critiqued to be sure
to mirror all the changes in the book and their respective
chapters. Additionally, establishing a workable time frame
for review and editing is critical. Since these professionals
have other responsibilities, each member played a vital role
in completing their assigned task of researching, writing,
formatting, selecting photograph, and confirming accuracy
of content delivery.
Writing a textbook and its revision is a true labor of love.
Finding the authors who are committed to collaboration,
having an open mind on revisions, and working with a
publisher eager to offer an updated textbook with present
knowledge are all critical operational goals when revising an
existing athletic training textbook. n
