Ohio State University strength and conditioning coach
doesn't pull any punches

f you want to play football at Ohio State University, you'd
better be ready for the truth.
" These athletes are being told things that they want to
hear, and I think it's my responsibility to make sure we tell
our athletes what they need to hear, " said Mickey Marotti,
Ohio State University's assistant athletic director for football
sports performance. " We keep it black and white; we keep it
transparent, and they are held highly accountable. "
Most programs like to use objective strength and speed
numbers, like how much someone can bench and what the
bench press records are so athletes have something to aim
for. Marotti instead likes to focus on the daily evaluation of
an athlete's attitude, effort and toughness using the publicly
placed Evaluation Board.

" It doesn't take into account recruiting stars, it doesn't
matter if you're a two-star, three-star, one-star, five-star or
no-star, " he said.
Athletes are given grades in three different groups
called gold, red or blue, and they are on a board for all to
see. Gold is the best and it can change daily based on how
they perform.
The board of truth is another " real " tool he uses to let
everyone know where they stand.
" Prior to our workout, I will give them the state of the
union of where we are as a team, where they may be as a
player or as a unit, depending on what time of year it is, "
he said. " We write it up on the board and we talk about
anything from academics, to recovery, to life messages
