their heart. "
Marotti said being totally transparent about their effort
and life struggles forms a strong bond between a coach and
their athletes. "
" We try to open up our hearts so they open up their
hearts, and once that happens you've got an athlete, " he
said. " We try to be as truthful as we can, so it is as real as
we can get. "
SUCCESSFUL PATH
Marotti has risen in the ranks in his profession since his
first job as the head strength coach at Grove City High
School in Ohio in 1987. Along the way, he has held the
top football strength and conditioning positions at the
University of Cincinnati, Notre Dame and the University
of Florida. He has been at OSU since 2012. Three years
ago he was promoted to his current position, where he
now oversees 21 strength coaches and is in charge of all
strength and conditioning programs for 36 varsity sports
along with the four training facilities at the university.
Marotti has seen plenty of change in the business since he
started 33 years ago.
" I always loved training - always, " he said. " I came
from a steel mill town in Pennsylvania and what you
did was you went to the steel mill to work and then you
went to the VFW Barbell Club to lift weights as soon as
work was over. That was a big deal in my town. I started
training when you were allowed to start training - I think
it was 13 when you were allowed to get a membership.
I've been doing it for a long time, and just kind of fell in
love with it. "
Marotti's hard work paid off and he attended West
Liberty University where he was a fullback and team captain
on the football team. He graduated in 1987 with a degree
in exercise science and went on to OSU to get a master's
degree in strength and conditioning and was a graduate
assistant with the football team under Urban Meyer.
" In my early years it was a strength program, a running
program and you were done, " he said. " Now, it is just so
encompassed with sports science, prehab, speed training
