2020 Athletic Trainer of the Year
FINALISTS
Cari Wood, Redmond High School (Redmond, OR)
Over the last 26 years at Redmond High School
in Oregon, Cari Wood, ATC, has displayed true
professionalism among her peers and student-athletes.
A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association
(NATA) Northwest Hall of Fame and former region
president, Wood has remained committed to her
profession, personal growth and love for the athletes
and coaches she serves. While obviously focusing
on healing physical injuries, Wood has also put her
attention towards the mental and emotional health of
her student-athletes. During every week of the season,
Wood requests feedback from student-athletes on how
they are doing emotionally and mentally. Additionally she
aided in developing a video entitled " Your Life Matters " ,
which centered around a Redmond student-athlete who
tragically took his own life - touching on topics of teen
suicide, anxiety and depression.
Wood is revered by parents and student-athletes
alike, hosting athletic physical nights where doctors and
helpers gather to help families get affordable physicals for
middle school and high school students.
Chrystal Charles, The Maclay School (Tallahassee, FL)
In three years time, Chrystal Charles, MS, ATC,
CES, quickly immersed herself into The Maclay School
community in Tallahassee, Florida. The Marauders had
previously set a high level of success on the field and the
addition of Charles only raised the bar with her tireless
efforts, attention to detail, and knowledge of cuttingedge
treatment, and therapy. She was responsible for
completely reorganizing her training room workspace
in addition to working with school administrators in
securing funding for new treatment and care modalities.
" I have been a teacher, coach, and athletic director
now for 40 years and Chrystal Charles is the best I have
ever worked with, " Jake Von Scherrer, CMAA Director of
Athletics at The Maclay School, said in his nomination of
Charles. " She is the rare individual who makes everyone
that comes in contact with her feel better. She has an
infectious 'winners' attitude that makes you want to do you
best because it's so obvious that she is doing her best. "
Cynthia " Cindy " Clivio, Kamehameha Schools
(Honolulu, HI)
For more than 30 years, Cynthia " Cindy " Clivio has
exemplified the role of a model high school athletic trainer
at the Kamehameha Schools in Hawai'i as the athletic
healthcare manager for three campuses on Oahu, Maui

and Hawai'i islands. Clivio helped expand the athletic
training staff from a small unit housed in a small room into
a world-class operation of more than 10 full-time trainers,
various part-time trainers across three different islands.
She has played a pivotal role in coordinating and
hosting professional meetings in the state and on
campus. Currently, Clivio is coordinating a Team Up For
Sports Safety (TUFSS) meeting in Hawai'i in conjunction
with the Korey Stringer Institute with the purpose to
advance the safety and well-being of student-athletes by
adopting standards for best practices.
" Whether providing medical care for an intermediate
school golfer or providing medical coverage at a state
championship varsity volleyball game, her high standard
of care never wavers. She puts the needs of her students
and school above her own, " Hawai'i Baptist Academy's
Samuel Lee said in his nomination of Clivio.
Kim Barber Foss, Lockland High School (Lockland, OH)
Working under the mantra of " athletic trainers provide
care, not coverage, " Kim Barber Foss, ATC, has lived out
that message for more than 30 years. While employed
at Linn-Mar High School in Marion, Iowa, Foss was
responsible for the sports medicine needs of more than
700 athletes and an integral part of implementing the
first AED policy in addition to working with her peers in
developing emergency action plans for each athletic venue.
When she moved on to Lockland High School in
Lockland, Ohio, where she's been for the last seven
years, she took her wealth of knowledge to completely
revamp the athletic training program - turning her
workspace that had only a table and an ice machine into a
comprehensive athletic care program.
" It takes a great athletic trainer to walk into a school
with nothing to create a great program. She thinks
outside the box and is great at repurposing items while
always ensuring that the athlete never feels slighted [by
a lack of available materials], " Gregory Myer from the
Cincinnati Children's Hospital said in his nomination form.
Lisa Walker, Springville High School (Springville, UT)
With 26 years worth of experience at Springville High
School in Springville, Utah, Lisa Walker has a number
of awards to speak for her proficiency in athletic care.
Among the awards include, Korey Stringer Institute
(KSI) Lifesaving Education Award, KSL Teacher Feature,
UHSAA Wrestling Appreciation, UATA High School
Athletic Trainer of the Year, UATA Hall of Fame, RMATA
Distinguished Service Award. It's with that experience
