Injuries
The nationally estimated number
of injuries for football in 2020-21
was 485,416 nearly twice as much
as the total from the sports with
second and third most injuries -
boys (143,124) and girls soccer
(133,171).
The remaining sports with the
most injuries are boys basketball in
fourth (129,429), boys wrestling in
fifth (81,045), girls basketball in
sixth (79,278), boys baseball in
eighth (70,377), girls volleyball in
fourth (61,279), and girls softball in
ninth (54,154).
Of the 1.2 million injuries, 787,261
came from males in the 2020-21
school year. Of that total, nearly
238,000 (30.2%) came from seniors,
the highest number of all grade
demographics. Injuries increased as
the male student-athlete rose in grade,
though every grade demographic had
at least 168,000 injuries.
The trends in male studentathletes
are a stark contrast to those
in female student-athletes. Freshmen
female student-athletes accounted
for 82,253 injuries (27.6%), the
highest number of all grade
demographics. Injuries decreased as
the female student-athlete rose in
grade, and every grade demographic
was under 100,000.
Those trends in both male and
female student-athletes hold true in
the 2018-19 study data as well as
the 2017-18 study data.
