the COVID-19 pandemic
threw a wrench in the
data - the 2018-19 study
reported similar numbers
of ankle injuries as 202021.
That year there were
211,369 ankle strains and
sprains, accounting for
16.2% of the 1.3 million
total recorded injuries.
Perhaps the 2019-20
school year, which was
greatly affected by the
injuries - nearly 70,000 more than head/face
concussions, the second-most recorded injury.
In total, ankle strains and sprains made up 18
percent of the 1.2 million injuries reported in
2020-21.
Diving deeper into the data shows that far away
damage to the anterior talofibular ligament was
the most common ankle injury with 69.5% of
ankle injuries. That
number bares out to
the rough average
over the last four
years. In 2019-20
there were 136,382
anterior talofibular
ligament (72.7%),
160,606 (70.7%)
in 2018-19, and
157,602 (68.6%) in
2017-18.
