he said. " The only way you do it is by
having clean fields and being on top of
it. There's nothing you can do once you
have a weedy field, or have a buggy field. "
Cover crops and solarization with plastic
help kill weed seeds, and mechanical
cultivation and hand labor are also
occasionally necessary.
The Yolo county soils include sandy
loams with river wash, as well as heavy
clay soils.
" We grow on all that ground, " Barsotti said.
The season typically starts in mid-March
and early April with asparagus and sweet
pea flowers, melons, tomatoes, bok choy,
eggplant, and some tree fruit. Additional
crops are grown in the fall and winter.
Today, the farm grows 40 types (60
varieties) of fruit and vegetable crops - a
lengthy list that Barsotti said he's paring
down for simplification' sake.
" We're managing too many crops, but
that's just how we've always done it, " he
said. " I think we're most known for our
heirloom tomatoes ... behind that our
satsuma mandarins, we do a good job
on those in the season. " The family is a
national shipper of vegetables, and in
order to make up its regular vegetable
mix, it relies on vegetables grown in other
locations throughout the state.

Although Capay Farm produces
roughly 50 percent of the produce for
Farm Fresh To You, Barsotti said the
service relies on deals with growers in
other regions to offer subscribers the best.
" We have a local first philosophy, but we
also have this idea that we're going to give
our customers the best selection possible,
and they're not going to get tired of getting
produce from us. So, we look at our farm
first, and see, 'Hey, what's in season?' And
that gets a first shot at the menu. And then
we move out in concentric circles and buy
what we need to get a good mix of greens,
fruits, roots and other things that people
are happy to use for the week. "
It's a headache logistically, but Farm
Fresh To You has its own refrigerated
warehouses and a fleet of vehicles that
deliver to doorsteps that are meant to
compete with other online delivery

" We're doing it all, " Barsotti said. One
extreme example included milk shipped
with ice packs to stay cool. " We're doing
