Proper postharvest handling of
winter squash starts with preharvest
control of powdery mildew and
keeping the vines healthy with adequate
irrigation and fertilization.
" Squash is a really heavy feeder, " said
Penny Perkins-Veazie, professor in
Horticultural Science at North Carolina
State University (NCSU). Keeping the
squash growing produces more starch in
the field and more sugar during storage.
Perkins-Veazie spoke on the
postharvest handling of winter squash
and pumpkins at the recent Ag Expo in
Wilmington, North Carolina. Ag Expo is
jointly presented by the North Carolina
Vegetable Growers Association and the
North Carolina Agribusiness Council.
You sometimes hear of wiping squash
with a weak bleach solution right after taking
them off the vine. NCSU researchers recently
tested the idea to see if a 10% chlorine dip
or spray would reduce the incidence of
storage rot. " We didn't see any direct benefit
under our ideal storage conditions, " PerkinsVeazie
said, and growers are left with good
harvesting and storage practices.
Cut the stems off the vines and don't try
to break them off. You want the stems to
stay on. Don't harvest when the vines and
fruit are wet, which spreads disease. Don't
handle the squash too roughly and try to
minimize scrapes and abrasions.
