Brassica growers will be busy
getting transplants and planters fit
to go this month. But, along with the
promise of spring comes the threat
of cabbage maggot. Chlorpyrifos has
been used for decades to control this
pest, but what else could be used?
Thankfully, there are a number of
insecticides labeled in rooting and
transplanted brassicas. The challenge
has been finding an alternative that is
as effective as chlorpyrifos.
What works in spring-sown,
Cabbage maggots are the larvae of a tiny fly that can cause big problems for brassica
growers. Maggots create unsightly tunnels in direct-sown, brassica root crops like
turnips, radishes and rutabagas. In leafy and heading brassicas - which are often

brassica root crops? In Michigan,
Ben Werling and Zsofia Szendrei have
worked with a grower collaborator
to screen products in turnips in four
years of on-farm trials. The evaluated
planting-time products were either
not effective (Capture LFR) or
caused stand reduction (Sepresto,
an unlabeled seed treatment). Postplant
applications of Mustang Maxx
consistently reduced maggot damage
in all three years we tested it. Mustang
Maxx was most effective when weekly
applications were initiated as soon
as flies emerged; waiting until fly
activity peaked resulted in more
damage. Learn more about timing

applications were as effective as
concentrated, banded applications.
Control with Mustang Maxx was
comparable to chlorpyrifos, but by
themselves neither product provided
excellent control. A combination
of chlorpyrifos in-furrow followed
by Mustang Maxx provided better
control than either timing alone in
two of three years. Among other
products, we found that a single,
post-plant application of Verimark
also reduced damage in two of the
four years we tested it. In years it
worked, it was at least as effective
as chlorpyrifos. It is not currently
labeled for post-plant applications.

What about transplanted
brassicas like cabbage, broccoli and
cauliflower? Faruque Zaman and
Dan Gilrein have conducted trials
in transplanted cabbage in Suffolk
County, New York. Verimark provided
control comparable to chlorpyrifos
when a tray drench was followed
by a second application two weeks
after transplanting (post-transplant
sprays were directed to the base of
plants). However, efficacy varied (7090%
control) depending on cabbage
maggot pressure. These treatments
also provided season-long flea beetle
and caterpillar control. Cabbage head
quality was excellent on plants treated
with Verimark, with no further
applications for insect control. Plots
without Verimark had extensive
caterpillar damage on cabbage heads
and wrapper leaves. Importantly,
Verimark is currently not labeled for
post-transplant applications, and we
have yet to determine the efficacy
