Not all farmers shine at marketing,
so a vegetable grower landing a healthy
investment and publicity from ABC's
" Shark Tank " for a value-added product
certainly makes the highlight reel.
At a taping in September 2019, Delaware
farmer Katey Evans pitched a full line of
super-premium ice cream, dairy-free,
gluten-free, and fat-free sorbet, along with
" nice cream, " a unique blend of ice cream
and sorbet. She struck a $125,00 deal with
" Shark " investor Lori Greiner for 30% of
her farm creamery business, The Frozen
Farmer. Following a vetting process, she
received the money, and the episode aired
nationally March 27.
Evans was also one of an elite number
of startup participants selected to have
footage shot on location at her farm
business, a " feature home package, " that
gave them more air time than other
participants in the program.
Katey's husband, Kevin Evans, is the
third-generation operator of Evans Farms,
a 2,000-acre operation in Delaware that
grows fruits, vegetables and grains. Joseph
and Rebecca Evans started the farm in
1943 with about 65 acres and grew a
variety of different fruit and vegetable
crops, including pumpkins, peaches and
proprietor of the farm. Katey said before
his father's death, Kevin had led the
development of a farm market and even
wholesale vegetable sales, bringing the farm
to " back to its roots " as a vegetable farm.
They later started a side business
in ice cream, as a way to use " misfit "
strawberries, melons and fruit from their
