Pumpkin season brings tips from the professionals

Pumpkins are a big cash crop
throughout the Midwestern United States.
Ohio ranks third in pumpkin production
in the United States, harvesting over
1 million pumpkins off of about 6,100
acres generating over $15 million. Illinois
is the leader in pumpkin acreage with over
17,000 acres and $25 million in sales.
Variety selection one key to
success
There are hundreds of pumpkin varieties
available. Choosing the correct variety
for your market and buyer is one of the
most important pre-planting decisions
that a pumpkin grower will make. Size and
weight are two factors to consider when
choosing which pumpkin varieties to plant.
Growers who plan to have pick-your-own
markets should keep in mind the size of
the pumpkins. Young children cannot
handle huge fruit. Smaller varieties, such as
Jack-Be-Little and Baby Boo, a white fruit,
are good choices for small children along

with many of the " pie-sized " varieties,
which range from 2 to 5 pounds.
Jack-O-Lantern varieties grown for
carving, have weight ranges from 5 to more
than 30 pounds. There are also pumpkins
of many colors including light or dark
orange, white, red, brown, blue, green and
more. Selecting the proper variety color
for your market should be considered an
important pre-planting decision.

Land preparation
Pumpkins have a large, deep root
system. Pumpkin roots can penetrate more
than 48 inches into the soil. Pumpkin
plants, however, will get most of their water
and nutrients from the upper rooting zone
where there is a larger concentration of
feeder roots.
Pumpkins perform well in most soils
in no-till systems. Cover crops often are
common practice in no-till systems, as
well. Ensure that you have eliminated any
emerging weeds at planting, commonly
with a herbicide program, which many
times will include a residual herbicide to
