Johnny's presents cherry tomato, acorn squash, microgreens
Each year, Johnny's Selected Seeds
evaluates thousands of seed varieties using
a strict set of criteria developed through
research, trialing and customer input. The
goal is to identify better-tasting, easier-togrow,
widely adaptable varieties for freshmarket
farmers and home gardeners.
This year, Johnny's novel introductions
include a cherry tomato, an acorn squash
and three innovative, exclusive mixes:
a frilly greens mix, a baby kale mix and
a beet/chard microgreens mix. These
additions to the product assortment will be
available in the 2020 catalog.
Citrine is a Johnny's-bred orange cherry
tomato that offers rich, balanced flavor, a
meaty bite, and resistance to the splitting
and cracking that is common with many
similar varieties on the market today.
Citrine's vigorous indeterminate plant
was selected for low-input systems under
heavy disease pressure and will produce a
reliable crop in harsh conditions. The ideal
cherry size at around 20 grams, Citrine
is a great match for Cherry Bomb, a red
cherry tomato bred by Johnny's. Citrine is
available in organic seed only.
growers can also combine it with baby leaf
lettuce to create a custom mix. Kalebration's
rich greens and reds show deep color
contrast in all growing slots, which makes it
a great candidate for year-round production;
and its strong regrowth allows for cut-andcome-again
harvesting. Johnny's selects
Kalebration for baby-leaf production rather
than for full-size use. Kalebration Kale Mix is
available in conventional seed only.
Rainbow Sprinkles Mix is an innovative,
Johnny's-exclusive microgreens blend that
offers the best of beets and chard - two crops
that are not typically combined for use at
the micro growth stage. Bright and cheerful,
Rainbow Sprinkles features maximum color:
rich-red and deep-green leaves as well as
a brilliant display of stem and vein colors,
including bright and light pink, orange,
red, and yellow. Varieties are selected for
similar maturity rates and seed sizes, so trays
germinate evenly. Rainbow Sprinkles Mix is
available in conventional seed only.

CITRINE
At last, an attractive acorn squash that
tastes amazing and stores through the
holidays. Johnny's-bred Starry Night
PMR is a superior acorn that does not
sacrifice flavor for a long shelf life, as is
typical of industry-standard green acorns.
Maintaining excellent eating quality even
after long storage (about three to four
months), Starry Night PMR retains its
smooth texture and sweet flavor. A unique
pixelated color pattern gives Starry Night
PMR a distinctive appearance that is easily
recognizable by market shoppers. The
vigorous plant has intermediate powdery
mildew resistance and a more manageable
bush habit. Starry Night PMR is available in
organic seed only.
Cheap Frills Mix is a Johnny's-exclusive
greens mix formulated to complement
Ovation, Premium and Elegance mixes.
A well-balanced blend of textures, flavor
and colors, Cheap Frills closes a Johnny's
assortment gap as it contains a greater
proportion of both red and green frilled
leaves. Both Golden Frills and Ruby Streaks
are highly textured, providing visual interest
and excellent loft so greens maintain their
fluffiness when sold loose or bagged. The
other components- mustards, mizuna and
tatsoi - round out the mix. Cheap Frills Mix
is available as conventional seed only.
Kalebration Kale Mix is a gorgeous baby
kale blend exclusive to Johnny's. Balanced
for brilliant colors and interesting textures,
Kalebration is so visually stunning it can be
marketed as a stand-alone product, though
