Rispens Seeds, Inc. enters 2025 proud to be
one of the few remaining family-owned seed
companies serving commercial vegetable
growers in the Midwest and beyond. For over
97 years we have been providing quality
vegetable seeds and excellent service to
commercial growers of all sizes. We have a
comprehensive trailing program evaluated
by our knowledgeable sales staff which has
decades of experience in vegetable
production and the seed
industry. We'd like to take
this opportunity to highlight
a few of the new options
available for the coming season.
There are a couple new and
interesting sweet corn hybrids to
consider for 2025 plantings. First is
Awaken, a bicolor supersweet that
fits in a planting slot that few other hybrids
can. At 68-days it combines earliness with
eating quality suitable for roadside stands and
shipping markets. Eight inch ears on average
provide good ear size with no compromise due
to early planting. In our trials we've observed
excellent standability and Awaken has the
added benefit of high resistance to common
rust, which may allow growers to utilize it for
" rain gap " plantings further into the season.
Second we have Magnolia MXR, a 75-day
white supersweet with high resistance to
common rust and Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus.
Magnolia MXR also has a strong tolerance to
lodging and has eating quality compatible
with roadside and shipping markets. Husks
are very attractive, ears have excellent tip fill
and yield potential is high.
In the long-day, yellow
storage onion department
is Odessa; a Rispens Seeds
exclusive. This 105-day hybrid
has good storage potential and is
currently being tested for extended storage.
Bulbs are mostly round and have good color
that suits the market well. One interesting
observation from 2024 trials was how well
Odessa tolerated post emergent herbicide
applications; this is something we will
continue to monitor going forward. Odessa
was trialed as RS410.
Virtue is a new early season seedless
watermelon with excellent uniformity, strong
yield potential and bright red, firm flesh. It
has shown strong early season performance
with good size potential in cool conditions.
Virtue has a durable rind that is light green
with hazy, broad, medium-dark green stripes.
Fruit are blocky in shape and the plant
has above average vigor. Virtue has high
resistance to Anthracnose race 1, Fusarium
wilt race 1 and reduced risk of crop loss due
to resistance to Powdery mildew race 1.
Among several additions to our hot
pepper offerings, Soundwave is a new midseason
jalapeno that features high heat
units and above average disease resistance.
The extra-large fruit are very attractive, 4 to
4.5 inches in length with dark green color
and thick walls. Heavy fruit make it suitable
for both fresh market and processing.
Soundwave has incredible shelf life and is
among the hottest jalapeno type peppers
at 5,500 to 6,000 Scoville heat units. It
has a strong plant with a great package of
high resistance to Bacterial leaf spot races
0-3, 7 & 8 and intermediate resistance to
Phytophthora capsici.
Finally, there is Mascota, a poblano/ancho
type chili pepper with incredible fruit size
potential. It has the standard two lobe shape
of a poblano with attractive dark green color
and thick walls on a strong plant. Mascota
is unique in that it provides high resistance
to Bacterial leaf spot races 1-3, which is
uncommon as most hot peppers go. This can
be especially valuable considering the wet
conditions many growers faced this season
which caused many crop quality issues and
yield loss due to this disease.
