The backbone of America
T
here I was just minding my own business and
finishing lunch when the phone rang. It was my
brother calling me from back home. He and my
sister-in-law have been remodeling my parents' house
in anticipation of our selling it, so I figured he was
calling to talk about the light fixtures, or the flooring,
the carpets and whatnot.
However, after the typical exchange of pleasantries
and chuckling over the squeals of delight I could make
out coming from my two-year-old great niece in the
background, my brother said he was calling to tell me
about something else. He had been at mass and heard
that my high school track coach had passed away the
night before. The virus had taken him - not COVID-19,
but West Nile.
When you were raised in a small rural town in
America like I was (and many readers of this column
were), you recognize that one of the things that makes
our small towns the backbone of our country is the
overwhelming sense of community. You share the good
times with one another, and the not so good times too.
It's part of a shared experience and is at its core, a
value you carry with you for the rest of your days.
My track coach had been raised in that same
community. He was the oldest of five boys and the
tales of holidays at his family's place were legendary
in our small town. But that can happen when you have
five boys. Interestingly, three of his brothers ended up
teaching and coaching as well.
After my coach graduated from the university, he
came back to our little town and taught high school
math. He also coached the junior varsity basketball
team and was the head track coach. There must have
been a little extra stipend paid for coaching because
he really wasn't a runner nor much good with a
basketball. However, he turned out to be a pretty good
coach and was a good teacher as well. He was good at
teaching lessons.
I remember when I was a sophomore and playing
both JV and varsity. We had been learning geometry
