that year and I was a bit rebellious over having to learn
something I didn't think I was ever going to use.
Friday night was game night and in the JV
basketball game we were playing a pretty good squad
from just down the road. We went through layups,
passing drills, rebounding, and shootaround in the
lead up to the game.
Then coach had us huddle up before the tipoff and
named the starting five. For the first time that season,
I learned I was going to be riding the bench to start.
As I headed to my unaccustomed spot on the bench, I
looked at coach and he was looking at me.
And then he said, " Maybe you'll turn your homework
in on time next week. "
I got in the game shortly after the start and I never
missed turning in my homework on time again. I taught
my son Pythagoras' theorem when he was about 4.
I remember the start of each year's track season.
Sometimes we had to work out indoors in early spring
because the temperatures stubbornly stayed below
freezing. But once we got past 35℉, out we would go.
For those of us working out, the exercise kept us warm.
But for coach, bundled up as he was in a powder
blue coaches' jacket, stocking cap, and gloves, he must
have been freezing as the wind blew. He would time
everything on his stopwatch and bark every now and
then, probably just to make sure his vocal cords still
worked. To this day I can still hear him hollering at me,
" Come on Marsh, get the lead out. "
But he was there every day, rain, snow, sleet and
when the sun was shining.
When I was working for a CPA firm in Denver, I got
word that my coach was sick. He was being treated for
leukemia at the University of Colorado Medical Center.
Even though it was tax season and we were all working
70 to 80 hours a week, every night after work I would
go to the hospital and spell his wife so she could get
some time.
We'd walk the halls of the hospital with coach pulling
along his IV drip for as long as he could go. When he
started to slow, I'd say, " Come on coach, get the lead
out. " That usually made him laugh.
That sense of community and shared experience is
a value we carry with us for the rest of our days. We
share the good times with one another and the not
so good times too. These are truly some of the keys
that make rural America something to rejoice and the
backbone that it is.
