DIAGRAM 1: Horns (A). The first
entry is from the " horns set, " with
action beginning on the left side of
the floor. 5 downscreens 3's defender,
allowing 1 to pass to 3. To occupy two
weakside defenders, 1 then breaks off
of 4's flare screen and continues down
to screen for 2. 2 breaks up to their
spot-up location opposite of 3 and the
ball.
DIAGRAM 2: Horns (B). As
1 and 2 work together, 4 breaks
quickly toward the ball to set a bigon-small
ball screen for 3. Before 4
reaches 3 and the ball, they break
off of the route and rim-run to
the basket. 5 has now pulled their
defender out to the ball-side deep
corner, with 2 and 1 spreading out
their defenders on the weakside. 3
looks to hit 4 isolated in the middle
of the lane.
If no shots are created, the same
four-out, one-in spot-ups are filled
for the next phase of the motion or
continuity offense.
DIAGRAM 3: One down (A).
In a one-down set, 5 breaks to
the center of the free-throw line.
1 dribbles toward 2 and makes a
handoff, and the ball is passed to
3 (1 also has the option of passing
directly to 3). 1 then shuffle-cuts off
of 5's screen followed by 2's cut to
the weak-side block.
DIAGRAM 4: One down (B). If
3 can't make the inside pass to 2 or
1 cutting off of 5's shuffle screen,
5 steps out to the top of the key
to receive 3's pass. On the pass, 1
widens out to the deep corner with 4
downscreening 2's defender before
stepping out to the deep corner.
DIAGRAM 5: One down (C).
5 passes to either 3 or 2. 5 follows
the pass, as if to set a ball screen,
but instead ghost screens for the
ball handler before rim-running to
the basket. All four teammates have

widened out behind the arc, giving
5 an isolated post-up situation. If
no shots are created, the action can
continue in the same four-out, onein
spot-ups. This play also can be
modified and run from a two-up set.
DIAGRAM 6: Three down (A).
From a three-down set, 1 looks to
hit 5 ducking in before then dribblescraping
off of 4's ball screen to make
a dribble-handoff to 2.
DIAGRAM 7: Three down
(B). After ball screening for 1, 4
downscreens in the deep corner. At
the same time, 5 breaks up as if to
set a long ball screen for 2. Before
5 gets to the ball, they make a quick
release to cut to the basket for
another ghost screen and isolation
in the middle of the floor. If no shots
are created, players are in the same
four-out, one-in spot-ups to continue
their attack.
These are just a few examples of
how valuable and simple ghost ball
screens can be. Creative coaches can
develop other entries out of these
sets to make their offenses more
dynamic. Defenses will not only have
to prepare for more common screens,
but now they must keep watch for
ghost ball screens. It can be difficult,
because defenses are spread out
allowing the ghost ball-screener to
be completely isolated. That leads to
easy baskets.
