'UTAH'

" Utah " is a sideline out-ofbounds
play that includes multiple
options. We have used this as our
primary sideline play for a number
of years. Defenses have a hard
time defending it because of all the
scoring options that come with it.
DIAGRAM 1: This is the initial
alignment. 5 screens for 2 and
posts up on the ball-side box. 2
uses 5's screen and cuts to ball-side
corner. 1 screens away for 4, who
cuts hard toward the inbounder.
DIAGRAM 2: Some of the
quick options that could present
themselves include 2 in the
corner or a direct pass to 5 on
the block for a post move. If 2
doesn't have a shot, they may
pass to 5 on the block.
DIAGRAM 3: What occurs
most often is 3 makes the pass
to 4. 4 takes a hard dribble or
two toward 1, who V-cuts to get
open. If the defense overplays
the pass to 1, 1 has the option to
go backdoor. On the pass to 1,
5 moves up to the elbow to set a
backscreen for 3, who shufflecuts
to ball-side box. 3 has the
option to cut either over the top
or bottom of 5's screen. 1 looks
to pass the ball to 3 on the box
for a layup or strong post move.
DIAGRAM 4: If 1 can't pass to
3, 1 looks for 2 coming off of a
staggered double screen by 5 and 4.
2 attempts to get open for a 3-point
shot from the top of the key.
DIAGRAM 5: If 2 does not have
a shot, 2 looks for 3 coming off
of a baseline staggered double
screen by 5 and 4.
DIAGRAM 6: 2 always watches
for a defensive mistake that might
lead to a pass inside on a slip by
either 4 or 5.
