Additional investments-along with future tax incentives
to bolster Brazil's H2 value/supply chains-are being made to
not only produce and distribute/export green H2
to the world but also to develop green H2
/ammonia
research centers,
Brazil, the country has more than 40
pilot projects under development.
Many of these projects are in potential H2
hubs
in the states/ports of Bahia, Pecém, Pernambuco, Rio
Grande do Norte and Port of Açu, among other regions.
These projects represent more than $20 B in capital
investments in the country, with some being funded by
the EU-Brazil has approximately $30 B in low-carbon
H2
projects (e.g., green/blue H2
) under development,
with several including carbon capture, according to government
data. In June 2023, the EU announced plans to
invest more than $2.1 B in advancing Brazil's green H2
value chain-part of the EC's Global Gateway strategy.

country with green H2
/ammonia export revenues.
For example, Casa dos Ventos and Comerc Eficiencia
are developing a green H2 production facility at the Industrial
Port Complex of Pecém. The 2.4 GW of electrolysis
capacity will produce 960 tpd of green H2
, which will be
converted into 2.2 MMtpy green ammonia for export to
regions such as Europe. The Port of Pecém is also the site
for Enegix's proposed $5.4-B Base One project. If built, the
facility will produce 600 MMkg/yr of green H2
.
In Bahia state, Unigel is developing a $1.5-B green H2
/
ammonia complex. Once fully operational in 2027, the
three-phase project will produce 100,000 tpy of green
H2
and 600,000 tpy of green ammonia-Phase 1, which
includes 10,000 tpy of green H2
ammonia production,
will be completed in
and 60,000 tpy of green
late 2023.
Although Unigel plans to export most of the green ammonia
to Europe, the company will retain some of it to produce
fertilizers and acrylics.
In the state of Piaui, Green Energy Park has launched a
feasibility study to develop a 1-MMtpy green ammonia production
facility. The facility can be expanded to 5 MMtpy, if
needed. Produced green ammonia will be used domestically,
with any surplus being exported to the international market.

Chile. The country has laid out a strategy to become one
of the leading green H2
producers in the region. Chile's
National Green Hydrogen Strategy details three waves of

* Wave 1 (2020-2025) includes the domestic ramp-up
and export preparation for green H2
. This includes
projects will not only help Brazil reach
six prioritized applications-oil refineries, ammonia,
mining haul trucks, heavy-duty trucking, long-range
buses and blending into gas grids-to build local
supply chains and experience in scaling up the
country's workforce and export abilities.
* Waves 2 and 3 (2025-2030 and beyond) focus
on capitalizing on export markets and expanding
green H2
production.
By the mid-2020s, Chile is targeting at least $5 B in
green H2 investments, 5 GW of electrolysis capacity operating
or under development (Chile plans to increase electrolysis
capacity to 25 GW by 2030) and 200,000 tpy of H2
production in at least two H2
valleys in the country: one in
the Antofagasta region and one in the Magallanes region.34
According to the country's energy ministry, Chile has the
potential to attract $45 B in green H2
increasing to $330 B by 2050.35

the GEI database was tracking more than $65 B in
active green H2
projects in Chile (TABLE 4).
These projects (including using green H2
as a transportation
fuel for mass transit vehicles and industrial operations,
such as buses and mining trucks), along with the closing
or retrofitting of all domestic coal-fired power generation
plants by 2040, will help Chile reach its ambitious goal of a
carbon-neutral economy by 2050.
Colombia. According to the country's hydrogen roadmap,
Colombia plans to build its H2
ecosystem on five pillars:
1. Emissions reduction
2. Economic growth (e.g., a low-carbon H2
economy)
3. A fair energy transition
4. National goals
5. Developing integrated H2
local communities.
By 2030, Colombia aims to develop 1 GW-3 GW of electrolysis
capacity, achieve competitive green H2
domestic SMR capacity. The low- and zero-carbon H2
production
costs (e.g., $1.70/kg) and produce at least 50,000 tpy of
blue H2
production capacity via existing and/or planned
