by Hyphen Hydrogen Energy. The company's two-phase,
$10-B project will produce green H2
that will be converted
into green ammonia for export, primarily to RWE AG
in Germany. The project could ultimately produce up to
2 MMtpy of green ammonia by 2030.
Namibia may also be the site of Africa's first H2
ered power plant. HDF Energy is investing nearly $200 MM
to develop a power station that is run on clean H2
According to the country's Green Hydrogen Roadmap,
Morocco has ambitious plans to significantly boost
domestic H2
production. Doing so will help the African

South Africa-Namibia imports approximately 40% of its
power needs. These two projects-part of Namibia's Vision
2030 initiative-will enable the country to satisfy domestic
power needs, as well as become the region's first nation
to be both carbon neutral and start up a H2
power plant.
country mitigate fertilizer imports and increase renewable
energy capacity market share in its domestic energy mix.
Morocco's goal is to increase its renewable energy market
share from less than 40% in 2022 to 52% by 2030 and up
to 80% by 2050. Additional solar and wind projects will
provide the country with both clean electricity and feedstock
for green ammonia production. Companies such as
Total Eren and OCP are providing Morocco with more than
$25 B in green H2
/ammonia projects. OCP plans to invest
approximately $7 B to produce green ammonia for fertilizer
production. In its initial phase, the facility will produce
200,000 tpy of green ammonia by 2026, ramping up to 1
MMtpy by 2027 and upwards of 3 MMtpy by 2032. Total
Eren is developing the $10-B Guelmim-Oued Noun project
in northern Morocco. The project will utilize 10 GW of
renewable energy to produce green H2
/ammonia.
Although Egypt, Morocco, Namibia and South Africa
account for most active H2
can nations are investing in green H2/ammonia projects, as
well. Mauritania has nearly $75 B in green H2
development. These capital

Other nations such as Algeria, Angola, Djibouti, Kenya
and Zimbabwe have all announced plans, Memorandum of
Understandings (MoUs) and/or strategies to increase H2
production capacity. Notable projects/initiatives include:

natural gas pipelines to green H2
. These pipelines
will extend through southern Europe to Germany.
* Angola: Sonangol is building a green ammonia
production facility in the port of Barra do Dande.
Once operational in 2024, the facility will export
as much as 280,000 tpy of green ammonia to
European countries such as Germany.
* Djibouti: Djibouti is working with CWP Global and
Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) to develop green
H2
/power projects. CWP Global plans to build 10 GW
of green energy to produce green power and green
H2
units in Goubet and Obock. These projects will
complement the country's Vision 2035 economic
plan, which aims at working with neighboring
countries to boost green energy production and
installing a green H2
for Djibouti. The country's government is also
working with FFI on new green H2/power production
hub at the mouth of the Red Sea.
* Kenya: FFI is developing a 300-MW green H2 facility
to produce both green H2 for the domestic power
generation and green ammonia to help satisfy the
country's fertilizer demand.
* Zimbabwe: HDF Energy plans to build a $300-MM,
178-GWh green H2
in southeast Zimbabwe. The facility will produce
green H2
that will feed the nation's power grid.
These projects, among others, will help Africa significantly
boost the production of renewable power, green H2
and clean ammonia/fertilizer production, increase clean
energy exports to regions such as Europe and help domestic
job creation, among other benefits.
