127-year-old water main gives way under
NYC's Times Square, flooding streets, subways
A 127-year-old water main under New York's Times Square recently gave way,
flooding midtown streets and the city's busiest subway station.
The rushing water was only a few inches deep on the street, but videos posted
on social media showed the flood cascading into the Times Square subway station
down stairwells and through ventilation grates. The water turned the trenches that
carry the subway tracks into mini rivers and soaked train platforms.

Underground fire bursts through
manholes, prompting evacuations
An early morning underground fire in downtown Colorado
Springs led to evacuations and power outages, as flames shot
up through manholes, causing a significant disruption in the
area, The Gazette reported.
According to The Gazette, CSFD Lt. Aaron McConnellogue said, " When our crews first
arrived, they found fire coming out of multiple manholes, coming up approximately 10 feet in
the air, getting close and impinging on the buildings there. "

Penn State study: Fiber optic cables offer
potential for early sinkhole warnings
Recent research conducted by a Penn State geosciences
associate professor suggests that existing fiber optic cables
beneath the University Park campus could serve as a means
to predict sinkhole occurrences, such as the incident
observed last week at the Eisenhower Parking Deck, Pennsylvania's WPSU reported.
Tieyuan Zhu, leading the Fiber-Optic for Environmental Sensing project (FORESEE) from
2019 to 2020, investigated sinkholes in central Pennsylvania. By utilizing the pre-existing fiber
optic cable network beneath the campus, Zhu's project aimed to detect vibrations resulting
from various environmental factors, including the formation of sinkholes.
