system and around 15,000 feet of associated
pipelines and equipment. Additionally, a $2.22
million loan will be designated to rehabilitate the
sewer collection system in Mankato.
Furthering this commitment, a financial
package consisting of a $7.84 million loan
and a $3.02 million grant has been assigned to
the construction of vital infrastructure in Neosho
County. This project involves the establishment
of a booster station, the installation of
a 400,000-gallon storage tank, and the
replacement of 39 miles of lines, alongside the
upgrade of 78 miles of existing lines.
Girard, a city in Kansas, is set to benefit
from a substantial investment of $13.3 million
in the form of a loan, complemented by
a $3.39 million grant. These funds will be
channeled into an extensive renovation of
the city's water system. Similarly, Humboldt
is slated to receive substantial support, with a
$9.49 million loan and an accompanying $3.49
million grant earmarked for the comprehensive
replacement of its water systems.
The financial backing for these initiatives
is being provided through two key USDA
programs: the Water and Waste Disposal Direct
Loan and Grant Program, and the Water and
Waste Disposal Loan Guarantees Program.
Communities unite to overcome
decades of undrinkable water
in West Texas
In a recent community meeting held in
July, residents from these rural West Texas
communities gathered, each holding a mason
jar filled with brown, cloudy water-a visible
testament to the water quality problems that
have troubled over 300 residents in these
areas, according to Amarillo Globe-News.

Shallowater, these communities have been
regularly notified of water quality violations by
the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality
(TCEQ), the state's environmental agency.
According to Amarillo Globe-News,
TCEQ records indicate that elevated levels
of fluoride, arsenic, perfluoroalkyl, and
polyfluoroalkyl chemicals have rendered the
water undrinkable for nearly two decades,
forcing residents to rely on bottled water.
Approximately 65 residents attended
the July meeting with a common goal-to
establish the South Plains Water Supply
Corporation. This collaborative public
entity aims to make these four housing
developments eligible for regional, state, and
federal funding. Amarillo Globe-News reports
that the newly formed organization, governed
by a board of directors representing all four
subdivisions, is working diligently to meet the
deadline for applying for around $3.3 million
from the Texas Water Development Board. If
successful, these funds will be allocated to
repair the broken water treatment and filtration
systems in the region.
