Intensive Outpatient Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program
The Matrix Model program spans 16 weeks of sessions in an open-group format that
addresses core clinical areas within five components: individual/conjoint sessions, early
recovery skills group, relapse prevention group, family education group and social support
group, with the option of adding site groups if desired. Weekly urine analysis and
breath alcohol testing is an essential part of the program. By participating in The Matrix
Model, clients:
* Realize positive changes in their behaviors and attitudes
* Learn about recovery skills for substance use disorders and self-help programs
* Become involved in recovery support groups
* Practice resocialization skills in a safe and familiar environment

The program uses materials developed and evaluated by the CLARE|MATRIX Institute, with
extra components for treating criminal offenders. Its clinical strategies address basic needs,
criminality, anger and hostility, identity issues, resistance, boundaries, relapse prevention,
peer support and creating a therapeutic alliance.
While this program is structured for 32 weeks, it can be easily shortened or lengthened. There
are six sets of sessions: individual/conjoint sessions, early recovery skills group, relapse
prevention group, family education group, adjustment group and social support group. The
manual also covers how to arrange for urine analysis and breath-alcohol testing.
