* Be respectful to staff members and peers. Do not
make derogatory remarks, jokes, or comments about
race, ethnic background, religious affiliation, sexual
orientation, or gender.
* Act in a nonviolent manner. Violent or threatening
(or perceived threatening) behavior, or physical,
emotional, or sexual abuse toward anyone, including
peers, other patients, Hazelden Betty Ford staff, or
Hazelden Betty Ford volunteers may result in your
discharge from Hazelden Betty Ford.
* Use of tobacco products anywhere other than your
unit's designated smoking area is prohibited. Tobacco
products are not sold on campus.
* E-cigarettes are not allowed on campus and will be
confiscated and destroyed.
* Open packages delivered to you in front of a staff

Group rules
As a patient, you are responsible for being respectful of
yourself and others. The peer group on your treatment
unit is a community, and the working relationships
within this group are beneficial to your recovery. We
expect that, as part of this peer group, you follow the
rules listed here:
* Be honest.
* Be considerate of, and respect the rights of, other
patients and staff members.
* Honor the confidentiality and privacy of other
patients.
* Try to understand your problem and take an active
part in your recovery program.
* Take an active part in group sessions and community
meetings.
* Comply with policies and expectations of your unit.
Appropriate Peer to Peer Interactions
in Residential Treatment
Guiding Principles: In order to promote an
environment that supports privacy, confidentiality,
safety and recovery, please respect the Appropriate and
Inappropriate Interaction campus guidelines and avoid
interactions outside of treatment related programming
and activities with people from other treatment units
or people participating in any Hazelden Betty Ford
Foundation level of care.
Limiting interactions outside of treatment-related
programming/activities is also one way to help ensure
patient and unit privacy, and also protects the culture
of their treatment unit and encourage strength of the
community. Sites will determine specific guidelines,
based on population, environment, building structured,
group composition, with examples below for guidance.
Appropriate Peer to Peer Interactions (Examples/
Guidelines)
* Appropriate interactions follow recovery principles,
staff's role is to help our patients learn how to have
appropriate interaction and avoid inappropriate
interactions.
* Focus on the patient's treatment community and
building appropriate interactions
* Casual conversation in hallways while walking to and
from multi-unit groups/lectures and other treatment
activities or in the halls for general purposes such as
meals, etc.
* Interacting with other patients in waiting areas or
other designated common areas.
Inappropriate Peer to Peer Interactions (Examples/
Guidelines)
* Exclusive interaction - where patients, even on the
same unit, are spending what would be considered an
excessive amount of time together, at the exclusion
of others. These types of dynamics can create
hostility, resentment, tension, conflict and prevents
opportunity for more inclusion and community.
* Hanging out/spending time on trails/walkways
and/or parking lots with those from other units/
LOC (levels of care), including online communication
(emails, texts, social networks, chat rooms, etc.).
* Spending time on and/or near other units/LOC and
unit smoking areas (if unit specific smoking areas
