Building Your Care Plan
Your care plan at Hazelden Betty Ford integrates the latest
research and proven-effective practices-and is carefully
designed to meet your specific needs, with whatever therapies,
mental health services and medications are appropriate.
Outpatient Programs
Your treatment journey at Hazelden Betty Ford
will move you through a variety of phases during
outpatient care and continuing care. Information about
programming follows.
Education Group-This group time includes a series of
workshops, videos and interactive exercises designed
to provide insight into the nature, progression and
characteristics of the disease of addiction. Focus
is on personal and family impact, identification of
self-defeating attitudes and behaviors, as well as
presentation of alternative coping methods and
recovery skills.
Process Group-Process group is a small group of your
peers facilitated by an addiction counselor, often your
individual counselor. This is the setting in which you
will begin to apply what you have been learning about
addiction and recovery to your personal situation. Here
you will begin to develop a network of sober peers with
whom you can be open and honest with your feelings
and explore the Twelve Step principles of recovery.
Specialty Groups-Our specialty groups help you
integrate recovery skills learned in education and focus
groups. Specialty groups include art therapy, spiritual
development, problem-solving and skill development.
These groups also assist you in learning how to reduce
your risk of relapse.
Individual Sessions-You will participate in individual
counseling sessions with your addiction counselor
throughout treatment. These sessions will be scheduled
between you and your counselor, and are designed to
address specific issues and monitor treatment progress.
Mental Health and Co-occurring Disorders-Many
individuals with substance use disorders also have
co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety
or bipolar disorder. In fact, we have found that cooccurring
disorders are the norm not the exception.
Hazelden Betty Ford provides integrated treatment for
co-occurring disorders. Treatment is evidence-based
and driven by assessment. The mental health services
we provide vary based on individual clinical needs and
ongoing assessment and observation. Care is provided
in parallel by several disciplines. In Chicago, we have
a psychiatrist and nurse practitioner on staff who is
available for consultation and medication management.
We have a psychologist and two mental health
professionals. In addition, all of our counselors are
trained to work with co-occurring disorders. We have
groups specifically focused on mental health issues,
such as trauma and resiliency and cognitive-behavioral
therapy. Our mental health clinicians work together as a
team to ensure that mental health needs are addressed
in an integrated fashion. We respect pre-existing
relationships with mental health practitioners and seek
to coordinate our care with them whenever possible.
