Values of the Twelve Steps
Step One-Honesty
We admitted we were powerless over alcohol-that our lives had become unmanageable.
Value: This step helps us shatter our reliance on a false self. We admitted we needed help (powerless over alcohol/
drugs and other's behavior): no more denial or blaming others.
Step Two-Hope
Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Value: Hope, and an understanding that we are not alone and that there are other possibilities.
Step Three-Faith
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
Value: Making a commitment to finding a new way of living and become willing to accept help.
Step Four-Courage
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Value: Self-examination may create defensiveness, this increases self-awareness, self-honesty and insight into our
behaviors.
Step Five-Integrity
Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Value: Admitting the truth about ourselves, self-disclosure, authenticity, humility. Continue to dismantle false self.
Step Six-Willingness
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Value: Insight into our behavioral patterns and a willingness to change.
Step Seven-Humility
Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
Value: Accepting ourselves with all our limitations helps us bring ourselves into relationship with self, others and our
world: we are all human.
Step Eight-Compassion/Love
Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
Value: Learn responsibility for our behavior and learn to respect others by making amends.
Step Nine-Justice/Discipline
Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Value: Practice integrity by making amends, fundamentals of healthy communication, delivering our message to the
proper person and being aware that we do not cause more pain with the amends.
Step Ten-Perseverance
Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
Value: Maintenance of honesty and humility, correcting upon awareness and guarding against false pride.
Step Eleven-Spiritual Awareness/Illumination
Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood
Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Value: Seeking inspiration and continue to seek more knowledge about our new way of life.
Step Twelve-Service
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to
practice these principles in all our affairs.
Value: Put into practice what we have learned and to carry the message to others, and to practice integrity in all our affairs.
