Commitment to Diversity, Equity
and Inclusion
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's vision is empowering
recovery and wellbeing for all. To fulfill our vision,
we strive to honor, serve, and advocate for people
from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
We intentionally practice inclusivity in an effort to
achieve recovery equity for all patients, families, and
communities. Treating staff and peers with respect is
an expectation. Any derogatory remarks, jokes, threats,
or comments made about race, ethnic background,
religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, or acts
of enabling such behavior are taken seriously and
will result in immediate action up to and including
discharge.
Community areas
Community areas are located in the living room and
library on your unit. Patients are expected to use these
spaces for social activities, reading and working on
assignments. Each patient is responsible for returning
cups and glasses to their proper places, picking up books
and magazines, and keeping the community areas neat.
Other areas of the building are not community areas and
should not be entered unless you have permission from
staff.
Nighttime hours
Be on the unit by 10 p.m. so night staff can account
for all patients in case of an emergency. Quiet hours
begin at 10:30 p.m. Please see your program schedule
for lights-out and in-room guidelines. Patient door key
cards are deactivated from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., and we ask
that you remain inside during these hours for safety
purposes. Staff conduct regular, overnight bed checks to
ensure all patients are accounted for and safe.
Dress code
Tops, bottoms and footwear are required at all times.
Hazelden Betty Ford does not permit clothing,
accessories or items that are suggestive of violence, gang
affiliation, alcohol or other drug use, politics or other
inappropriate content that may be offensive to patients,
staff or visitors.
Exercise/fitness/leisure activities
Exercise and physical activities are important in
early recovery. We have a dedicated staff member
who facilitates our wellness program for patients.
Before using the campus gym, please attend the gym
orientation. For your safety as well as the safety of
others, you must be cleared by our medical unit before
using the exercise equipment. Upon medical clearance
and orientation, we encourage you to engage in physical
activity regularly, to the best of your ability. Gym hours
are posted outside the gym. Options for physical activity
include walking or running the paved Twelve Step path,
using the gym, taking yoga classes (offered weekly) or
playing basketball. Exercise DVDs are available on the
treatment units as well. We also have wellness groups to
teach stress management skills, mindfulness practices
and holistic wellness education. Other leisure activities
on the treatment unit include horseshoes, board games,
puzzles, bocce ball, Ping-Pong and more.
Group commitments
As a patient, you are responsible for upholding the
integrity of the treatment community by treating
yourself, peers, staff, and the program with respect. The
peer relationships in this community are an important
part of your recovery. In order for these relationships to
function well, we ask that you commit to the following
group guidelines to ensure that treatment groups are safe
and respectful spaces for everyone:
1. I commit to allowing one person to speak at a
time and to give space for all members to have
opportunities to participate.
2. I commit to being mindful of my tone of voice and
body language and will use appropriate language and
respectful humor.
3. I commit to upholding the confidentiality of the
group, meaning that " what is shared in group, stays
in group " and is not to be discussed outside of group
unless I'm talking about myself and what I learned.
4. I commit to leaving my cellphone in my room.
5. I commit to arriving on time. I will let the group
know at the beginning if I need to leave for an
appointment during group time. If I have a conflicting
appointment, I will enter or leave group quietly and
respectfully.
