Visitors
Hazelden Betty Ford hosts in-person visitors when
permitted by Oregon Health Authority and organization
leadership. Please refer to your schedule for specific days
and times of visitation.
For the protection and comfort of patients, visitors
and staff, all visitors are asked to sign a confidentiality
form and sign a guest log at every visit. Visitors must
leave all cellphones, backpacks, and purses in their
vehicles. Strollers, diaper bags, culturally important, and
medically necessary items are permitted and are subject
to inspection with a staff member. Once you arrive to
treatment, you'll write anyone you anticipate to visit
you while you're in treatment-even if you're not sure if
they'll come-in your unit's visitation binder at the front
desk. You may always add names and remove them from
your list. With the exception of anyone under the age
of 18, visitors whose names aren't on the list won't be
permitted into visitation. This is to ensure the safety and
privacy of all patients.
Visitors under the influence of any mood-altering
substances will not be allowed to visit, and staff will
help coordinate transportation for them. If they leave
with the intention of driving and appear to be under the
influence, the police will be called. Patients and their
visitors may visit in the dining room, lecture hall and on
Hazelden Betty Ford grounds. Visiting is not permitted
in patient rooms, living areas or decks/patios. Smoking
is not permitted for visitors.
Visitors are not allowed to bring animals to campus or
leave them in a vehicle parked on campus, this is for the
safety of the animals, other patients and staff. Service
animals are allowed.
Visitors will give any items for patients to staff upon
arrival. Due to space constraints and food safety
precautions, we are not able to accept any homemade
food items or food items that need to be stored in a
refrigerator or freezer. Staff will search any items brought
by visitors. Patients will be able to retrieve these items
after visitation has ended.
Safety & Security
It is the goal and desire of Hazelden Betty Ford to
provide the safest environment possible for you and
all of our patients. You are responsible for learning and
following all safety procedures including severe weather
information, fire, emergencies and evacuation plans.
Please review and follow these security procedures.
* You are responsible for securing your sleeping room
when not occupied. Make sure all valuables are
locked in your room safe.
* Keep your windows closed and locked at night for
safety purposes. Many rooms are on ground level.
* Patients are to remain in the residential building from
11 p.m. to 6 a.m. During these hours, your key card will
be automatically deactivated and will not work on
external doors. If you become locked out, please use
the main entrance of the residential building, which
is kept unlocked at all times. Please do not use items
to prop open doors. This is to ensure the safety of
all patients in the building. When a door is propped
open, everyone is vulnerable to intruders.
* You are to be inside Hazelden Betty Ford buildings
and off the Twelve Step path by dusk.
* You are not permitted to leave Hazelden Betty Ford
grounds without staff approval.
* If a peer is not in their room during normal bedtime
hours, contact staff immediately. Also, if you know
of a peer leaving campus without permission, please
notify staff immediately.
Emergency contacts
Dial 911 for emergencies such as fire, accidents or other
serious incidents.
As part of the admission process, all patients will
identify an emergency contact. At the time of admission,
you will be asked to sign a release of information for
your designated emergency contact.
Returning to substance use
in treatment
People in early recovery are at high risk for returning to
substance use. Patients in day treatment are at increased
risk of returning to use due to having greater freedom
and unstructured time in the evenings and on weekends.
If you return to use or if you suspect a peer has returned
to use, inform staff immediately. We cannot help if we
do not know. If one person starts using, others are at
increased risk of using as well, so it is vital to inform
staff immediately. If you or a peer uses while off campus,
