SECTION 1 HELPING MORE PEOPLE The Hazelden Betty Ford Patient Care Network operates as a clinical collaboration among high-quality health care organizations that share a philosophy about the most-effective, evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders and a commitment to improving patient outcomes. An estimated 20.8 million Americans suffer from a substance use disorder, and most of them also have a comorbid physical health condition. Many of these patients begin receiving care for their comorbid physical health condition without having their underlying substance use disorder addressed. The result? Less favorable medical outcomes and higher rates of health care utilization compared with the general population of patients who do not have a comorbid health condition. There is a need for a more strategic and concerted effort across multiple disciplines and areas of expertise if we are to effectively help more people. Providers and patients alike recognize the importance of this collaboration in delivering the most-effective overall care. 1
