a variety of other factors beyond the control of the
growing child. The same is true with substance use
disorder. Genetic predisposition, home environment
and social factors all play a part and are pretty much
outside a person's control. When we begin to accept
that we did not choose our condition, we experience
freedom from guilt and shame.
Accepting the disease of substance
use disorder
Changing our self-perception is often the key to
overcoming the shame of substance use disorder, but
it is nearly impossible to do this alone. It's important to
realize that others play a part in our achieving a sense of
self-acceptance.
If we are striving for self-acceptance, we must do two
things.
1. Spend less time with people who are intolerant of
our disease.
2. Develop a support system that accepts our
condition.
There is no better place to find this acceptance than in
the fellowships of AA and NA. The lack of acceptance
we bring to recovery has taken a long time to develop,
and we can't expect it to disappear immediately. Like
most things of value, self-acceptance is a process that
is usually gradual but certain to happen if we earnestly
work the Twelve Steps of the AA or NA programs.
People with substance use disorder accept themselves
when they accept their disease. Like the adolescent
who denies fear of dating but refuses to ask anyone
out, many people with substance use disorder say they
accept their disease but act differently. Let's examine
four approaches that can help people with substance
use disorder accept their disease.
Abstaining from drugs
The one behavior that most clearly reveals acceptance
of our disease is not using any mood-altering
substances.
Openly acknowledging substance use disorder
While denial is often reflected by hiding, acceptance
is often reflected by admitting our disease. In early
recovery, many of us may refuse to tell friends, relatives
and acquaintances that we are substance dependent.
Avoiding the subject of substance use disorder and
involvement in AA or NA exposes a lack of acceptance.
Being willing to openly discuss our condition is the
beginning of acceptance, and through it we accomplish
four things:
1. We reinforce within ourselves an acceptance of our
disease.
2. We eliminate the fear of wondering, who knows
what, and what can we tell to whom?
3. We find out which friends and associates really
support us.
4. We lay the groundwork for future opportunities
to help other people suffering from substance use
disorder.
