Patient Expectations
General guidelines
All patients at Hazelden Betty Ford follow these basic
expectations during treatment:
* Abstain from mood-altering substances, except
as prescribed. Violation of this expectation can
result in your discharge from Hazelden Betty Ford.
If you brought alcohol or other drugs, or someone
has brought them for you, turn them over to a staff
member.
* Stay on campus. Do not leave the grounds without
specific permission and staff approval. Leaving
the grounds without permission may result in your
discharge from Hazelden Betty Ford.
* Respect the confidentiality of other patients at
Hazelden Betty Ford, both while in Hazelden Betty
Ford and after treatment.
* Be respectful to staff members and peers. Do not
make derogatory remarks, jokes or comments about
race, ethnic background, religious affiliation, sexual
orientation or gender.
* Act in a nonviolent manner. Violent or threatening
(or perceived threatening) behavior, or physical,
emotional or sexual abuse toward anyone-including
peers, other patients, Hazelden Betty Ford staff or
Hazelden Betty Ford volunteers-may result in your
discharge from Hazelden Betty Ford.
* No tobacco or other nicotine related products are
allowed anywhere on campus.
* Do not gamble. Many patients have financial
problems, some are on limited incomes and some
have a gambling problem or substance use disorder.
We don't wish to further burden patients with loss of
pocket money or other possessions.
Group rules
As a patient, you are responsible for being respectful
of yourself and others. The peer group is a community,
and the working relationships within this group are
beneficial to your recovery. We expect that, as part of
this peer group, you follow the rules listed here:
* Be honest.
* Be considerate of, and respect the rights of, other

patients and staff members.
* Honor the confidentiality and privacy of other
patients.
* Try to understand your problem, and take an active
part in your recovery program.
* Take an active part in group sessions and community
meetings.
* Comply with policies and expectations of your unit.
Photographs and other recordings
To ensure confidentiality and privacy of patients,
Hazelden Betty Ford does not allow photography or
videotaping on campus. All patients have the right to
refuse being photographed or recorded, except in the
instance of routine security monitoring. Camera cell
phones may not be used for photography. Photography
or videotapes taken without permission will be
confiscated or deleted. This policy also applies to visitors.
Relationships during treatment and
early recovery
Hazelden Betty Ford encourages you to develop healthy
friendships with peers from your unit and treatment
group. Learning to trust and support each other in
treatment and recovery can help you change and
sustain long-term sobriety after treatment. It is normal
to develop strong bonds with and feelings for peers
as you become more open with others in your peer
group. However, it is important to not allow these new
relationships to become romantic or sexual.
Your personal recovery should be your main focus during
treatment. Sexual and/or romantic relationships can
cause serious problems in early recovery. The powerful
feelings connected to developing a new relationship may
feel good but can quickly become destructive. Sexual
and/or romantic relationships during your early sobriety
can become distracting because more time is spent
thinking or even obsessing about the other person than
focusing on your health and recovery.
If you are romantically or sexually attracted to someone
on campus, please discuss this with your counselor.
Romantic and sexual relationships on campus may
diminish the focus on your health and recovery and,
