Your Safety and Security
We pride ourselves on providing a safe and caring environment
-a place where you can begin to heal. Familiarizing yourself
with the following information about campus services and
regulations will help make your stay more comfortable as well.
Twenty-Four Hour Staff Coverage
Hazelden Betty Ford provides staff coverage 24 hours
a day. To ensure patient safety, our staff, technicians,
and nurses make rounds daily. During sleeping hours,
staff will make regular checks in each room. To avoid
waking patients, staff will not knock before entering.
During waking hours, staff will also make rounds and
will knock before entering a patient's room. If you are
worried about a peer or roommate, please contact a staff
member. We are here to help.
Fire, Emergency and Evacuation
Plans for what to do during an emergency are posted on
the unit. Please become familiar with them. Fire drills
are held routinely at various times during the day and
night. Staff and patients participate in these drills. This
is another reason why staff needs to know when you are
away from the unit. General directions regarding what
to do during an emergency are discussed in patient
orientation and the Patient Governance Meeting on a
weekly basis.
Confronting Unsafe Behavior
Hazelden Betty Ford believes in treating patients with
dignity and respect and maintaining a safe environment
for patients, staff, and visitors.
For Hazelden Betty Ford to maintain a safe
environment, you need to confront peers on
inappropriate behaviors. Using " I feel " statements
can be helpful when confronting someone who is
engaging in unsafe behaviors. If you feel uncomfortable
confronting a peer, look to one of the senior peers

for guidance or go to any staff member. If behaviors
continue after you have confronted someone, ask staff
for assistance with the issue. Choosing to ignore unsafe
behaviors puts you and your peers at risk, so please
speak up. All unsafe behaviors, including bullying,
violence, threats of violence, and harassment, are taken
seriously and are potentially grounds for discharge from
the program. If you have any questions or concerns, see
your primary counselor or unit supervisor.
These expectations have been created to enhance
the community environment and to facilitate your
development throughout treatment. Continued
disregard for expectations may result in discharge
or restrictions. Sexual contact, violence, theft, and
substance use are grounds for immediate termination of
your treatment.
Unlawful Behavior
Bringing, using, or distributing any drugs or alcohol
(other than approved medication that is prescribed to
you and provided to your clinical team) in Hazelden
Betty Ford Foundation facilities is a violation of law and
subjects you to sanctions, up to and may include you
being asked to leave treatment, and/or the involvement
of law enforcement, at Hazelden Betty Ford
Foundation's sole discretion. These actions are
illegal activities on our campus and bring your
behavior outside the protection of federal and state
confidentiality laws. Your status as a patient is not
a barrier to disclosure of your presence and identity
in cases in which you are committing a crime on our
premises.
