West Los Angeles Handbook 2023 - 16
Changing Your Life
Our program goals and expectations are designed to ensure
that you and other patients here have the best opportunity
to learn, change and heal-one day at a time.
Treatment Goals
The following goals are assigned to all patients:
* Learn about the disease of addiction.
* Begin to practice the principles of Alcoholics
Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
* Develop self-discipline and responsibility.
* Start to live a structured and balanced life.
* Improve relationships.
* Enhance spirituality.
* Improve problem-solving skills.
* Learn to find enjoyment in sobriety.
Progress Measurement
Your progress in treatment will be measured by your
ability to:
* Abstain from the use of mood-altering substances
that are not prescribed and monitored by a medical
professional and within program formulary
guidelines.
* Act in a manner that is consistent with your goals.
* Consistently meet the guidelines and expectations.
* Develop and maintain positive relationships with
your peers and staff.
* Focus on your recovery.
* Apply the recovery principles of the Twelve Step
program, (e.g., AA, NA or Cocaine Anonymous).
* Make realistic plans regarding your continued
abstinence and holistic recovery.
* Move from clinical care to self-care.
In the event that you or your treatment team believes
you are not making the expected progress, a staff
meeting will be scheduled at which time you and the
clinical team will review the situation. New treatment
recommendations could be made that include a referral
to another Betty Ford Center service or even a program
outside of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. If such
recommendations are made, you and those individuals
you had indicated you wanted involved in your
treatment-such as family members, significant others,
therapists, physicians and insurance companies-would
be included in the treatment planning process.
Patient Expectations
General guidelines
All patients are expected to follow these guidelines:
* Abstain from mood-altering substances except as
prescribed and monitored by a medical professional.
* Respect the confidentiality of other patients at the
Betty Ford Center, both during and after treatment.
* Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's vision is
empowering recovery and wellbeing for all. To fulfill
our vision, we strive to honor, serve, and advocate
for people from diverse and underrepresented
backgrounds. We intentionally practice inclusivity in
an effort to achieve recovery equity for all patients,
families, and communities. Treating staff and peers
with respect is an expectation. Any derogatory
remarks, jokes, threats, or comments made about
race, ethnic background, religious affiliation, sexual
orientation, gender, or acts of enabling such behavior
are taken seriously and will result in immediate
action up to and including discharge.
* Act in a nonviolent manner. Violent or threatening
(or perceived threatening) behavior or physical,
emotional or sexual abuse toward anyone-including
peers, other patients and Betty Ford Center staff-
may result in removal from the program.
* Use tobacco products in the designated area outside
the building. Tobacco products are not allowed
in restrooms, lounge areas, individual and group
therapy rooms, just outside the Center or in the
