Track: Core Clinical
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION:
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
With all of the rumors, myths, and misinformation that
exist about attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD), it can be difficult to know what is fact and
what is fiction. Is there a relationship between ADHD
and substance use? If so, why does this correlation
exist and what can be done to prevent substance use.
ADHD has historically been a diagnosis shrouded
with judgment and a devaluing of its existence, yet
research has identified " externalizing " pathways seen
in those with ADHD, used to describe individuals
who engage in behaviors that are sensation-seeking
or risk-taking, which makes them more likely to try
addictive substances. For those diagnosed with
ADHD and who are impacted by substance use,
analyzing best practices to help treat both diagnoses
is essential. By understanding the way the brain works
in ADHD, a better understanding of interventions
can be explored to impact the nervous system and
positively influence symptoms of ADHD. The training
will navigate the vast research on building practical
strategies and tools that can be implemented immediately
in practice such exercise, movement, diet,
and mindful practices. Interventions will be discussed
to address the impact of the environment on ADHD
as it pertains to treatment and support.
257. Kids in Context: Organizational
Readiness to Treat Adolescents
With Substance Use and Other
Behavioral Challenges
KATIE BERRY, PHD
Track: Core Clinical-Ethics
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: ADVANCED
This presentation is both educational and instructional.
The audience will learn the basics of adolescent
neurobiology as it relates to substance use and other
behavioral challenges. Research on the importance
of the social context of residential treatment to
improving interventions efficacy will be summarized
and reviewed. Ethics of helping professions that
support the investigation and attendance to the
social environment of treatment will be identified
and explained. The audience will be provided with
evaluation and assessment tools to monitor the
social health of their adolescent clients as well as
strategies to improve the social context of adolescent
treatment.
258. Health, Wellness, and Quality
of Life Satisfaction Among Persons
Receiving Medication for Opioid
Use Disorder
RHONDA PATRICK, PHD
Track: MAT
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION:
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
This workshop explores the health, wellness, and
quality of life of opiate-dependent individuals who
are receiving medication for opioid use disorder. The
foundation of this workshop is based on the results of
a 12-year longitudinal study assessing improvement
of quality of life and the influence of demographic,
psychosocial, and drug- and health-related variables
on individuals' QoL. Ultimately, the study has
revealed that individuals receiving medication for
opioid use disorder need psychosocial supports
throughout the entirety of their treatment, regardless
of the length of the episode. Consequently, a more
holistic approach to opioid use disorder, which goes
beyond pharmaceutical interventions, is needed.
This workshop explores integration of pharmaceutical
and psychosocial interventions and the complexity
of providing the " right " treatments and the " right "
times for the best outcomes.
