277. Integrating Substance Use and
Trauma Treatment: How Cognitive
Processing Therapy Can Provide
Relief for Those Suffering From
Trauma and Addictions
KELLY SOUZA, PSYD
Track: Core Clinical
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: INTERMEDIATE
This session will focus on the co-occurring diagnoses
many patients present with-specifically PTSD and
substance use disorders-and how it is crucial to treat
all conditions in treatment to allow for full healing and
minimize chances of relapse or return to treatment.
This session will specifically look at how trauma fuels
addictions and if untreated, recovery is challenging.
This session will examine the specific treatment for
PTSD-cognitive processing therapy (CPT)-and
how working through PTSD utilizing CPT can significantly
reduce symptoms and relationship to trauma,
resulting in improvement in ability to abstain from
substances. The principles of CPT will be discussed
as well as interventions and how CPT interventions
while in recovery from substance use disorders promote
long-term sobriety. Participants will gain skills
in ways to assess for PTSD and interventions focused
on addressing the underlying trauma that often fuels
substance use disorders. If multiple aspects contributing
to dysfunction in interpersonal functioning are
addressed, the client has a better chance of maintaining
recovery and reduces relapse rates.

290. We Say Addiction is a Family
Disease! Is It?
MICHAEL BARNES, PHD, LAC, LPC;
MARY WOODS, MSHS, LADC LCS,
BC-RN
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: ALL
For decades, addiction professionals have educated
families about addiction as a disease that impacts the
entire family system. But when compared to other
medical and mental health treatments, we fall short in
our integration of addiction and family services, and
in the benefits that family involvement can provide in
terms of client treatment outcomes. The presenters
will introduce a rationale for implementing addiction
treatment that is fully trauma-integrated and that
simultaneously targets individual and family recovery
needs. It will focus on pervasive myths about low
family motivation to participate in the treatment process
and how these myths negatively impact family
engagement. The presenters will review Behavioral
Family Therapy, the Family Systems Illness Model,
and I-FAST (Family Therapy for Treating Trauma) as
models of family treatment/therapy that have been
successfully used in the treatment of other chronic
diseases and with individuals and families that struggle
with chronic mental health issues. Finally, the
presenters will discuss solutions for overcoming existing
roadblocks that prevent the integration of family
services in existing models of addiction treatment.
