325. Harm Reduction for Skeptics:
Practicing Alcohol Moderation in a
Post-Pandemic World
CYNDI TURNER, LCSW, LSATP, MAC;
CRAIG JAMES, LCSW, LSATP, MAC
Track: Core Clinical
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION:
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
The COVID-19 Pandemic contributed to drastic increases
in drinking, leading unprecedented numbers
of people seeking treatment with the abstinence
model not always being the right kind of help.
Pre-pandemic, more than 90 million people in the
United States struggled with alcohol use but were not
physically dependent. Most programs are designed
for the severe alcohol user, encompassing about 17
million people, leaving the majority experiencing
problems from alcohol without appropriate services.
With the numbers of people suffering from alcohol
use disorders likely to continue growing and the
DSM-5 now viewing substance use disorders on a
spectrum, behavioral healthcare providers need to
have resources that are appropriate for all levels of
alcohol use. There is more than 50 years of research
that supports the harm reduction strategy of alcohol
moderation as an effective treatment modality. Upon
completion, attendees will be able to: describe why
harm reduction is an effective treatment option
for the majority of alcohol users, predict who is a
candidate for alcohol moderation using the Alcohol
Moderation Assessment, develop and monitor an
Alcohol Moderation Plan, and utilize alcohol moderation
tools. Participants will walk away with tangible
tools and experience a paradigm shift in how we treat
people with alcohol problems.
326. Multidimensional Treatment
of Young Adults With Complex
Clinical Profiles in a Community
Model Setting: Why It's Necessary
and How It Works in Practice
BRITTANY BECKER, LMHC
Track: Core Clinical
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: INTERMEDIATE
Mental health treatment programs for young adults
have historically divided people into specific tracks
depending on their primary mental health diagnosis.
The problem? A rising number of young adults are
entering treatment with complex, co-occurring
disorders that one or even two therapeutic modalities
alone cannot address. Research now points to
16 #EAstcoAstsymposium22
the clinical value of a multidimensional treatment
approach rooted in community engagement. This
presentation will educate attendees on the benefits
of a multidimensional model: treating peers with
multi-diagnoses together and highlighting the
research behind community engagement on mental
health. We will define and help attendees understand
the different services that define multidimensional,
or holistic, care, including: individual therapy, skillsbased
coaching, integrative psychiatry, health and
wellness practices (such as working with dietitians
and fitness instructors), and conventional group
therapy. Finally, we will review the clinical benefits
of this multidimensional, multidisciplinary treatment
model, and the research that supports it for treating
the next generation.
327. Protocol for Use of
Buprenorphine Long-Acting
FormulationsDavid Mathis, DO
Track: MAT
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: ADVANCED
This presentation describes a protocol to safely
transition opioid use disorder patients to long-acting
formulations of buprenorphine. Long-acting
formulations of buprenorphine provides significant
advantages to the use of sublingual formulations.
Some of these advantages include that the buprenorphine
formulation does not contain naloxone, which
if absorbed will cause acute opioid withdrawal, and
lead to loss of control regarding the use of opiates
and other potentially misused drugs, and will improve
compliance, resulting in more consistent blood
levels.
By learning how to transition patients to the long-acting
Buprenorphine safely, clinicians will find detoxing
their patients to be increasingly easier and safer without
the fear of life-threatening situations that often accompany
withdrawal. Additionally, the patients will
find this form of detox more comfortable and as such,
the potential exists for significant decrease in relapse,
therefore leading to a higher success rate in treating
patients with addiction. In the long run, this could
lead to better med adherence with other disorders,
decrease hospitalizations from relapse, cost savings
with less laboratory tests, and overall safety for both
the patient and their family.
