355. Practice Makes Peace:
Implementing the 12 Principles
of Alcoholics Anonymous in Your
Clinical Practice
ALAN HEIDE, LMFT
Track: Core Clinical
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION:
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
Recovery can be difficult to obtain and difficult to
treat in clinical practice. In 12-step programs we
learn to practice peace. Throughout the journey of
recovery, we must look back to our experience with
Honesty, Hope, Surrender, and Courage. We must
learn to be present in our strength through Integrity,
Willingness, Humility, and Love. Then we can begin
to build a future of Hope through Responsibility, Discipline,
Awareness, and Service. By practicing these
twelve concepts we can and will grow personally,
add value to our community and make peace with the
difficulties that face all of us in life.
By reviewing and exploring the 12 principles associated
with the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous,
clinicians will gain a deeper understanding of the psychological,
emotional, and spiritual journey that their
clients pursuing recovery must undertake in order to
consistently practice peace in their daily lives. With
a deeper look at the 12 principles, clinicians will find
themselves walking away from this presentation with
a greater understanding of how to assist their clients
in navigating the road to recovery.
356. New Technologies for
Measuring, Monitoring, and
Mitigating the Role of Stress in
Addiction
EVIAN GORDON, PHD, MD
Track: Core Clinical
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: INTERMEDIATE
One of the most important drivers of mental health
and addiction rehabilitation is stress control. But
accurately monitoring stress levels hasn't been
possible...until now. New technologies now make it
possible to track heart rate variability (HRV), the best
measure of stress, in real time. In this session, you'll
learn how to leverage this technology to monitor,
and even predict, stress in your patients. Further, you
will learn specific adjunctive digital therapies, that
can be deployed in real time to mitigate the impact
of stress, and reduce cravings in the moment. These
real-time interventions help improve the chances
of successful rehabilitation. (Data from a Total Brain
study, n = 1,003, shows a 30% decrease in stress,
a 27% decrease in anxiety, and a 25% decrease in
depressed mood for users who screened at risk for
addiction AND completed 2+ hours of training with
TB's self-care exercises.)
357. Medication Assisted Therapy
(MAT) and Transitions of Care in
Opioid Use Disorder

prevention, harm reduction, and overdose prevention.
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is part
of the " whole-person centered care " approach in
the treatment of substance use disorders. Research
supports that medication and psychosocial support
therapy can provide better patient outcomes for
some people with a history of chemical dependency
and addiction. MAT can help sustain those recovery
efforts.
As part of the session, we will help identify patients
who are appropriate for MAT therapy for the treatment
of alcohol and opioid use disorder, We will also
review and compare additional treatment options for
other substances including cannabis, methamphetamine,
and cocaine. We will recognize the process of
stabilizing, maintaining, monitoring, and modifying
the treatment of patients on buprenorphine and
other MAT options. We will review the benefits of
incorporating the NSS-2 Bridge Device to manage
opioid withdrawal symptoms while transitioning from
the use of opioids.

375. Medications for Opioid Use
Disorder Save Lives: Closing the
Treatment Gap
STEVEN PROCTOR, PHD
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
Confirming
early fears of accelerated drug overdose
deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately
100,000 Americans died last year of a drug
overdose-the greatest overdose-involved loss of life
in a single year (CDC, 2021). Medications, including
buprenorphine and methadone, are considered the
gold standard in the treatment of opioid use disorder
(OUD). In the face of surging overdose deaths, largely
attributed to fentanyl, OUD medications remain
highly underutilized. Despite significant cost savings
and strong evidence demonstrating that these medications
effectively cut the overdose death rate in half,
few treatment programs offer OUD medications and
only a small number of providers account for most of
the buprenorphine prescribed in the U.S. Less than
40% of residential addiction treatment facilities offer
OUD medications, and just 5% of prescribers in office-based
treatment settings account for over half of
all buprenorphine prescriptions. Greater availability
of these medications, not only in addiction treatment
settings, but in hospital emergency departments via
integrated, low-threshold bridge clinic programs, is
a requisite if America is to turn the tide on the opioid
overdose crisis. Research findings documenting the
effectiveness of OUD medications will be reviewed,
and perceived barriers to adoption (patient and
provider stigma, burdensome federal regulations,
etc.) and potential solutions to close the treatment
gap will be covered.
