How to Navigate the Ethics of
Diagnostic Uncertainty
ashleY vandercar, Md, Jd
Practice/ProfessioNal
maNagemeNt
A patient's treatment is guided by their diagnosis.
Unfortunately, it's not always easy to make a
diagnosis. This is particularly true when a patient
is an unreliable historian, or there is an overlay of
substance use. This session will explore the use of
ethical principles (autonomy, justice, beneficence,
and non-maleficence) as a means of guiding treatment
in diagnostically challenging cases. Specific
emphases will include malingering ( " fake good " or
" fake bad " ) and substance-induced psychosis.
