Career Development: " We Only
Keep What We Have by Giving
it Away "
Jay w. voigt, mBa, med, lpc, cas shrm-cp
Jonathan p. de carlo, cas
Career development is not embedded in the culture
of addiction treatment professionals as deeply as
other sectors in healthcare. This workshop is intended
to help individuals new to substance use disorder
treatment begin to map out a career path. Attendees
will be asked to practice career development skills
such as networking, self-assessment, and job analysis
as part of the workshop. This workshop will provide
a foundational framework for early-career addiction
treatment professionals to develop competencies
necessary to establish a fulfilling career in the
substance use disorder treatment field. Participants will
develop an understanding and practice professional
networking strategies; complete a brief career
assessment and identify roles within substance use
disorder settings that maximize the participant's use
of their strengths; and identify professional skills or
competencies necessary for their " dream job. "

Applying Best Practices in
Measurement-based Care in
Substance Use Disorder Treatment
corey waller, md, ms, facep, dfasam
Clinical data is all around us. Electronic health records
are ubiquitous and can organize vast quantities of
patient-level information with ease. Interpreting that
data, however, typically mystifies most clinicians and
program administrators. Measurement-based care
is an approach to clinical practice wherein clinical
data is gathered in an intentional, repetitive method
to track symptoms, functional outcomes, and overall
patient status over time. That clinical data is then
used to highlight change in patient status over time,
to reduce clinician bias in communication about a
patient case, to improve clinician understanding of
the patient's clinical presentation, to improve patients'
self-reflection and understanding of progress, to guide
in-session communication and treatment planning, and
to predict deterioration in patient status early in any
decompensation process. Measurement-based care
can help clinicians better understand their patients
and patients understand themselves, ultimately
strengthening the therapeutic alliance and allowing for
agile and truly personalized care planning. Participants
will be provided with recommendations on which
psychometrically validated instruments can be used
to build out a comprehensive measurement-based
care program. Further, attendees will learn how to
aggregate a collection of measures to understand
overall patient health status and compare this data
to other patients, thereby attending that minority
of patients who most likely demand the majority of
treatment teams' attention at any given time. Finally,
attendees will be provided with skills to utilize this

data in patient care and with external stakeholders-
disparate groups who are invested in the patient's
status but are typically not behavioral health experts
themselves. Suggestions for scripting and verbiage will
be shared and taught.
Eastern Religious Influence,
Psychology, and Enhancing DBT
and ACT Effectiveness
christopher w. mcduffie, msw,
acsw, cadcii
Attendees will learn how to enhance their
understanding and application of DBT and ACT,
through a lens of Buddhist psychology, teachings,
and practices. Clients will benefit from this enhanced
understanding and be better equipped to apply
Buddhist teachings with DBT and ACT coping skills to
help prevent relapse. Attendees are encouraged to
consider how this presentation may be used personally
or professionally to help their clients enhance their
own religious or secular practices, and knowledge or
practice of Eastern religions is not necessary.
Looking Back and Stepping
Forward: Innovative Engagement in
the Tele-Behavioral Health Era

While the pandemic may ebb and flow, we know that
the world of tele-behavioral health (TBH) services is
here to stay. On one hand, it is a world where clients
have access to high-quality care at the tips of their
fingers, and clinicians can reach deep into the rural
parts of our communities, providing care where no
care has been before. On the other hand is a whole
new slew of challenges related to client engagement,
transitions through the continuum of tele-care, and the
development of tele-wise clinicians. How does a director
manage program development, quality maintenance,
and evaluation? How does an administrator monitor
business operations, employee retention/engagement/
development, or imagine the environment of care?
Moreover, how do we provide creative services to the
dually diagnosed client and keep them engaged for
an appropriate length of stay in the virtual space? This
presenter trio includes a therapist and program director,
an administrator, and an executive who ran treatment
programs before, during, and after the first two years of
the pandemic. A look back at necessary adaptations and
lessons learned through this era provides deep insight
for the next steps forward to maintaining long-lasting,
successful treatment programs. Attendees will walk
away from this presentation having gained tangible
skills and knowledge related to executive functions
of maintaining a successful treatment program,
administrative leadership necessities, and provisions for
direct care, treatment, and services. Topics covered will
include revenue restructuring, systemic reorganization,
culture transformation, clinical supervision and staff
engagement, the work-from-home/in-home-treatment
paradigm shift, telehealth and licensing regulation
complications, ensuring client confidentiality and safety,
and client engagement and retention.
Not Making it Someone Else's
Problem: Treating SUD in Pregnancy
Brooke schaefer, np
Treatment for SUD during pregnancy can be difficult
to obtain. Biases toward care can fog the path
