Association of Addiction Family
Service Providers Meeting
2022 was the start of a new focus on family services
within the addiction treatment community and the
early formation of the Association of Addiction Family
Service Providers. Last year, a discussion was held at
each of the HMP Addiction Symposia about how best
to develop comprehensive services for families. As
part of this discussion, we discussed the viability of
developing an association for addiction professionals
who work with families. Topics discussed were
how to reduce compassion fatigue and maintain a
healthy family services workforce, developing a set
of best practices for family services within addiction
treatment programming, and how to implement
family-focused outcome measures to demonstrate the
value of family services in the recovery process. If you
or anyone you know is passionate about improved
family services and interested in being part of this
launch/movement/group, please attend this brief
introductory meeting and brainstorm session. Thanks,
and pass the word about this meeting to others who
are interested in family services!

Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery
Enhancement: An Evidence-based,
Neuroscience-Informed Therapy for
Addiction, Stress, and Pain
eric l. garland, phd
Half of all people with a substance use disorder (SUD)
have chronic pain, and more than a third have a cooccurring
psychiatric disorder. Unfortunately, there are
few evidence-based therapies that can simultaneously
treat this complex comorbidity. To meet this need,
Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE)
was generated through a decade-long treatment
development process funded by the National Institutes
of Health. Rooted in affective neuroscience, MORE
unites mindfulness training, cognitive-behavioral
therapy, and principles from positive psychology into
an integrative therapy designed to target addiction,
stress, and pain. This session will detail the theory
underlying MORE, research data demonstrating
MORE's effectiveness, and unique clinical skills
integral to this novel treatment. MORE has been
tested in 11 clinical trials funded by more than $40

million in federal research grants. In the largest trial
of MORE (250 patients with opioid misuse/OUD),
MORE decreased opioid misuse by 45% by 9-month
follow-up, more than doubling the effect of standard
therapy. MORE also significantly decreased chronic
pain, distress, depression, and PTSD. Neuroscience
shows that MORE decreases the extent to which the
brain is triggered by drug cues, while increasing brain
responses to natural, healthy rewards. MORE should
now be disseminated by behavioral health providers
around the nation. Attendees will learn several highly
effective, evidence-based techniques that can be
used to: decrease drug craving and physical pain;
regulate negative emotions and trauma reactions;
and increase positive emotions and the sense of
reward and motivation. Attendees will also learn
principles from social-behavioral learning theory to
enhance motivation to change, maximize therapeutic
expectancy, and positively reinforce success
experiences to increase treatment engagement.

Behavioral Healthcare Treatment:
Assessment for and Meeting the
Clinical Needs for Autism Spectrum
Disorder Dual Diagnosis Clientele
deJa gilBert, phd, lmhc, lpc
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is being diagnosed at
astounding rates. Yet, while mental health and substance
abuse providers and treatment centers have long seen
individuals seeking care, diagnosed or undiagnosed
ASD, most do not understand or are not trained and
therefore lack the ability to identify or treat from a
neurodiversified clinical approach. The therapeutic
implications of not being able to identify and treat a
neurodiverse individual can be damaging to the entire
therapeutic process and the responsibility now lies on
therapists and administrators to account for this growing
population. This session aims to provide knowledge
and understanding around assessment tools as well
as clinical approaches to treating the co-occurring
neurodiverse individual in a mental health or substance
abuse primary setting.
Coping With Comorbid
Complexities: When an Eating
Disorder Accompanies a Substance
Use Disorder
sandra wartski, psyd, ceds
Dual diagnoses require dual recovery focus, though the
combination of an eating disorder (ED) and a substance
use disorder (SUD) adds a unique complication. While
recovery from SUDs generally focuses on more of an
abstinence and letting go approach, ED treatment
focuses more broadly on moderation and letting in.
There is frequent intersection and overlap of these
serious issues, and careful attention to finding effective
ways to hold the dialectic of these approaches is
