Transitional Family Therapy:
Skills-Building for Working With
Youth and Their Families
Judith l. landau, md, dpm, lmft, cfle,
cip, cai
The phase of youth represents a unique intersection of
competing life forces, unavoidably colliding at a crucial
stage of development. Not since baby boomers has a
generation had such impact. We need to address how
we develop and foster resilience within this population
as it navigates trauma, mental health, and/or addiction
during this crucial developmental phase. Due to
changing expectations and rules for this generation,
the current population of youth has been saddled with
particularly challenging circumstances leading them
to be broadly (and unfairly) labeled as the " Failure
to Launch " generation. Therefore, we must utilize
effective clinical interventions to instill the type of
resilience necessary to foster a thriving and productive
society. Research shows that connectedness or
attachment to family and culture of origin correlate
with reduced risk-taking behaviors and reduction in
violence and post-traumatic stress, substance abuse,
sexual risk-taking and similar process addictions
(food, shopping, etc.), and other chronic and/or lifethreatening
illnesses. Facilitating these family, cultural,
and community ties and enhancing access to family
and community resources can therefore be protective
against addiction, mental illness, stress, and destructive
behaviors. This intergenerational connectedness
fosters resilience and reduces the short- and long-term
effects of these stressors on families and communities.

Leveraging Community
Partnerships to Enhance
Recovery Opportunity

There is need for innovative approaches to address the
substance misuse epidemic that coordinates efforts
of multiple stakeholders, including government, law
enforcement, and healthcare providers. Opioids
have been rampant for several years, resulting in
year-to-year increases in overdoses and deaths, while
the concurrent use of methamphetamine and other
drugs has not abated. In spite of best efforts, overdose
deaths continue to increase. In Tucson, Arizona, the
Deflection program models a coordinated effort
led by law enforcement partnering with integrated
health and behavioral health, united in their goal to
reduce substance misuse and deaths in Pima County,
Arizona. The presenters will speak to several drivers
of success for the Deflection program. These include:
strategies to enhance the working partnership between
law enforcement and behavioral health/substance
use treatment programs; and the selection process
utilized to identify and implement the best practices
for the program, both law enforcement best practices
and behavioral health best practices. Additionally,
presenters will demonstrate the importance of ongoing
evaluation of outcomes to enable building a framework
for improving program delivery, leading to increased
participant satisfaction. Coordinated responses
involving law enforcement and treatment providers

based treatment and services and, ultimately, save lives
and communities. Implementation of the Deflection
program required a merging of the cultures, visions, and
values of the partners. Workshop presenters will discuss
how they addressed divergent beliefs between agencies
around substance misuse, community relations, and the
syncing of the missions and values of multiple systems
through collaboration and education, creating solutions
informed by best practices of both law enforcement
and treatment. Presenters will discuss strategies for
generating potential solutions to common community
challenges and barriers to achieving including effective
community-based collaborations.
The Neuroscience of
Adolescent Addiction and
Innovative Approaches
drew dutton, med, mBa, lpc-s,
lcdc, acps
This workshop will review the current problem of
adolescent addiction and best treatment practices
for effectively engaging teenagers in treatment and
recovery. This presentation will provide an overview
of the neuroscience of adolescent addiction that
has been adapted for easy understanding for both
clinicians and providers alike, as well as an overview
of the current national and global state of addiction,
current barriers to addiction treatment and successful
outcomes, and the impact of COVID-19 on addiction
and treatment. The workshop will discuss a variety of
innovative approaches and modalities for counseling
addictions, including accurate empathy, positive
psychology, solution-focused counseling, clientcentered
approaches, and cybernetics/systems theory.
The Use of Neurotechnology and
Interventional Psychiatry in the
Treatment of Pain Recovery
Jason l. thompson, Bsc, qeeg-t
James montgomery, md
Today in the US, it is estimated that approximately 100
million adults live with daily chronic pain and that opioid
analgesics have been prescribed for up to one-third of
patients in primary care clinics. The United States leads
the world in the consumption of opioids. This sharp
rise in usage over the past decade has led to the public
health crisis linked to overdose deaths. Typically, the
etiology of chronic pain is poorly suited to be managed
by medications, as the suffering associated with pain
is more of the central issue requiring remediation. Our
approach will highlight the usage of neurotechnology
(i.e., dTMS, HBOT, qEEG, and NFB) and integrated
psychiatry. This presentation will include the use of data
to adjust treatment protocols and guide strategies for
success. This process results in the empowerment of the
patient. Case examples and video demonstrations will
be included.
Treating " Resistant " Clients:
Effective Strategies for Responding
to Challenging Clients (Part 1)
Bruce e. fischer, phd, lp, lmft
This session is intended to assist professionals in
responding effectively to resistant (uncooperative or
over-cooperative) clients. The session will begin with a
brief discussion of resistance and its forms and functions.
Next, five basic skills for effectively responding
to resistance will be overviewed and illustrated. A
demonstration role play will be used to illustrate how
