the skills can be applied in the treatment process.
Participants will leave the session with an expanded
understanding of resistance, a richer understanding of
various reasons for resistance, and five practical skills
that can be applied in a wide range of cases and settings.
Using Energy Psychology to Rapidly
Restore Balance and Treat Trauma
roBert schwarz, psyd
Energy psychology (for this workshop we'll focus
on EFT, or " tapping " ) is a bottom-up approach that
rapidly calms the body and restores balance when
people are under stress or dealing with trauma. With
over 125 studies, these mind-body meridian tapping
approaches have been shown to be incredibly effective
for treating anxiety, stress, depression, pain, and PTSD
for adults, couples, adolescents, and children. In this
workshop you will get a brief review of the research
showing that it works, the theory of why it works, the
many applications where it can be used, and a " map "
of how to use EFT as a self-help tool and as a clinical
tool within the three phases of trauma treatment.
These approaches are a game changer in helping
people rapidly return to their better selves. Attendees
will discover how they can help clients rapidly reduce
negative affect and restore balance without resorting
to using substances. We will review how to teach
clients to use EFT as a self-help tool as part of a phase
1 intervention and how they can use EP/EFT to treat
traumatic memories and events themselves as part of
phase 2 of trauma treatment. Participants will also learn
how to map EFT onto relapse prevention protocols as
part of phase 3 of trauma treatment.

Filling Up and Emptying Out:
Overcoming Compassion Fatigue,
Burnout, and Vicarious Trauma for
Substance Use Disorder
Counseling Professionals

As behavioral health professionals, we operate under the
auspices of ethical practice. This is to protect individuals
in our care from harm. How often do we apply the
principles of beneficence and non-maleficence to
ourselves? As clinicians walking with clients along their
path to sobriety, we bring our own life experiences
along with us. These can be protective factors for our
emotional well-being or risk factors, depending on the
clinician's level of self-care or compassion fatigue (CF),
burnout, or secondary traumatization. As we strive to
maintain our compassion resilience, it is imperative
that we support ourselves, colleagues, and supervisees
to do the same. The ability to recognize the signs and
symptoms of CF, burnout, and secondary traumatization
is integral to early intervention and the restoration of
compassion resilience and ethical practice. Attendees
to this presentation will be introduced to the signs
and symptoms of compassion fatigue, burnout,
and secondary traumatization. They will recognize
the physiological, emotional, spiritual, and ethical
implications of these conditions on themselves and
their clinical practice. Attendees will be introduced to
the principles and skills necessary to support individuals
to reestablish compassion resilience, physical health,
emotional well-being, and ethical practice.
Healing and Recovery Through
Spirituality and Music

According to the CDC, overdose rates have increased
on average over 30% in the past year. There are many
factors contributing to this rise, including access to
treatment, prevention, and recovery services. There
is no one approach that will help people with any
chronic illness and over the past few years most of the
focus on treatment has been on medication, which
is an important tool in our treatment toolbox but only
part of the journey to recovery. SAMHSA defines four
dimensions of recovery: health, home, purpose, and
community. This workshop will provide an overview
of the four dimensions by demonstration of how
spirituality and music can be tools for engagement,
resilience, connection, and purpose, demonstrating
the connection between music, spiritual values, and
memories. This interactive session will provide an
overview of music therapy interventions, role play of a
music group, and interaction with a live performance
of music.
Patient Engagement: The Missing
Link in Collaboration
andrew J. schreier, ics, csac,

As we strengthen the power of collaboration among
healthcare systems, judicial systems, government and
policymakers, social services, and treatment providers,
we cannot neglect the most important component:
the individual we are helping. Building collaboration as
the individual is involved between different systems,
services, and organizations is important. But what about
the collaboration with the patient while they are in our
services? Patient progress is frequently measured and
viewed based on their engagement in services. While
