Beyond Medication: Is
Psychotherapy a Must in the
Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder?

This workshop explores the importance of purpose,
meaning, and life satisfaction for persons with opioid use
disorder. The foundation of this workshop is based on the
results of a review of GPRA data collected from persons
receiving medication for opioid use disorder through
SAMHSA TTOR/SOR grants. The review indicates that
individuals receiving medication for opioid use disorder
(OUD) need a more holistic approach to OUD that goes
beyond pharmaceutical interventions. This workshop
explores the necessity of psychosocial interventions
and the complexity of integrating pharmaceutical and
psychosocial treatments.
Treating the Heart of Addiction

There has been a recent emphasis on the role of beliefs,
motivation, and medication in the treatment of disorders
including substance use disorder and gambling
disorder. This session examines the role of emotion in
the development and maintenance of these disorders,
as well as the role of emotions in treatment. As we move
toward medical models of treatment, the discussion
considers the heart of emotions and therapeutic alliance
as central parts of the change process to establish
freedom from harmful behavioral processes and the
attainment of long-term recovery. The session will
build on specific applications of tools and techniques,
comparing and contrasting the implementation of
standard approaches such as behavioral, cognitive,
experiential, and Rogerian techniques as implemented
to deepen and change different emotional states.
Together this can lead to more productive management
of common emotional states such as anger, fear, and
grief. This integrative approach to change can build
on existing theory, applying a sense of " what works for
whom " to the choice of treatment planning.

Cannabis in the 21st Century

This presentation will outline the rapidly changing
culture of cannabis use, highlighting potency and
routes of administration, perception of risk, and
common exchanges regarding substance use. It
will share popular marketing campaigns targeted to
a variety of populations. It will review public health
concerns including increases in adolescent use, vaping,
exacerbation of mental health problems, psychosis,
health concerns of using during pregnancy and
breastfeeding, and increase in cannabis use disorder
and dependence. We will identify new trends in use,
potency, products, and marketing practices; discuss
the impact of cannabis use on physical and mental
health; describe how the legalization of recreational
cannabis has influenced public health, perception, and
consumption; and review current research pertaining
to addiction, intelligence/academic success, and
parenting and effective ways to communicate use
deterrence. Overall, it will provide information to have
an intelligent " cannabis conversation. "
